Quote:
Hip hop artist and singer Wyclef Jean will not be able to run for the Haitian presidency after the country's electoral commission ruled that he is not eligible to do so.

The former Fugees frontman had been eager to run for president, seeking to be a major part of rebuilding the country where he was born.

But that dream came to an end when the electoral commission released its ruling late Friday, without providing an explanation for its decision.

While the 40–year-old Jean was disappointed, he said that he accepted his fate.

"Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee's final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same," Jean said in a statement.

He called for his supporters to ask "peacefully and responsibly" in reaction to the news.

The public seemed divided as to whether Jean should be allowed to run for the top job in Haiti when he lacked political experience and had only a vague platform.

He has also faced criticism over the way the Yele Haiti charity, which he stepped down from at the start of his campaign, handled its money. Jean has since said he is now working to improve the organization.

But there is no doubt Jean's presence in Haiti had focused attention on the country's leadership needs.

"His candidacy certainly did shake things up," said Laurent Dubois, a Haitian historian and Duke University professor. "But it's still a very important election whether Wyclef is in it or not."

Rice University professor Mark Jones said that other candidates would do well to build bridges with Jean during their own presidential campaigns.

"The other candidates should try to get him on their team," he said.

The next Haitian president will manage billions of aid dollars that will go to rebuilding Haiti, which is still recovering from the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed 300,000 people and levelled much of its capital city in Port-au-Prince.

These very factors contributed to a climate where voters could consider electing an outsider like Jean, said Haiti expert Robert Fatton Jr., of the University of Virginia.

"The very fact that he is taken seriously when, in fact, he has no preparation to be president is an indication that the whole country, in particular the youth, looks at the typical Haitian population as a bankrupt kind of species," Fatton said.

Jean was among 15 candidates who were rejected by the commission. Nineteen were approved to run in the upcoming election, including former prime ministers Jacques-Edouard Alexis and Yvon Neptune.

With all due respect, what were you expecting him to do? What are his qualifications to lead a country, that by any standard, is beyond Third World? If his major qualification is being a minor celeb, I say let Sean Penn be God for Life there. Read the article in last month's Vanity Fair.

Hey Ronald Regan was famous before he became a leader.... then he was infamously known for other things.

Politics aside, Reagan ran the biggest state in the States for however many years. He had executive experience. This guy has nothing to bring to the table beyond minor fame.

And isn't there the matter of like half a mil missing from his foundation? Seriously, I think the last thing that place needs is a celeb expat looking to put some meaning to his otherwise shallow Hollywood existence.
