Insects!
Shot this lil film in my garden.
Insects are so friggin cool, after filming this i now think twice about swatting flies <object width="400" height="300"><param name="allowfullscree n" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptacc ess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_i d=14542000&serve r=vimeo.com&show _title=1&show_by line=1&show_port rait=1&color=&am p;fullscreen=1&a utoplay=0&loop=0 " /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_i d=14542000&serve r=vimeo.com&show _title=1&show_by line=1&show_port rait=1&color=&am p;fullscreen=1&a utoplay=0&loop=0 " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="tru e" allowscriptaccess="a lways" width="400" height="300"></embed></object> who here finds insects interesting, and who here finds them just plain disgusting? this film seems to have split opinions lol.

i like insects. i dont like them eating, touching, buzzing, or mating, on or around me. i try not to kill them but i cant sleep with a giant bug sitting on the wall in my room because i know in that little insect brain hes thinking, "damn mafoos mouth seems like a real nice place to land"

hmmm its a tricky one to explain. i guess there were a lot of different thoughts that went into it, but it isn't about one specific thing.
The order of events goes like this. I got the camera i shot it on about 2 weeks ago, which is a Canon 550D Dslr, so as its new ive been playing with it friggin loads. Then i found out about Reverse lens Macro photography (if you go on my vimeo page youll see a film called Extreme close up, where i experimented with this technique). it basically involves taking the lens off and turning it around, and holding it in place by the sensor, and it allows you to get very nice macro shots, with an extremely specific point of focus. Next up i found a bunch of dead insects near my window, and thought to myself Lets see it close up! - as i found this really interesting i then decided to go and actively seek out other dead insects, in my shed, in the basement etc. Finally in an attempt to get more dead insects i wound up trapping a moth under a glass and held it there for about 3 days until it was dead. This is the moth you see in the final few shots of the film. While i was taking shots of it i felt pretty guilty as i had killed it specifically for the sake of photographing it, i was also aware that it could become some kind of creepy unattractive obsession. it was then that i decided to begin filming live insects, roaming around in my garden when i could etc etc. i found that live insects are way more interesting to look at, far more fun and challenging to film (as you have to get about 2 inches away from them for them to come into focus) and youd think twice about killing one when you see it fill the frame. especially when its humbly going about its business, pollenating flowers or whatever. So Id say in one respect its about Fascination and Guilt, Voyeurism (what with the extreme close up of the human eye being the shot that divides the film between alive and dead insects, and maybe an attempt to change peoples perspectives slightly. i liked showing something that not many people would see that close up. Also though when i was mulling it over the alive/dead contrast was interesting to me. as some people may know a very close friend of mine is pretty ill with leukaemia, and this is a constant source of stress in my life. scince shes been diagnosed ive thought about death a lot more than is perhaps healthy for a 20 year old. Her illness is something im still trying to express in a video without being direct and exploitative. The soundtrack seems to work for me because the building insect noise, not only is a sound that would maybe generate fear in some people, but for the soundtrack ive manipulated it to sound like an expression of fear on behalf of the insects. as for the speaking on the radio some of it was about impending danger in Somalia and other general negative babble which worked along with the other noise. Some of the radio talk i just couldnt escape from having in the film. like you can catch something about hip hop. unfortunately i lack the technical knowhow or the patience to try and get rid of it. Glad you enjoyed the video anyways. sorry bout my overly wordy explanation of it.

pretty much anything arisol will suffocate something.
I cant say as id rather spend 3 days dying than to just be gassed with something flowery. I wasnt trying to be a dick, just seems kinda horrible to let something die of thirst and hunger, even a moth. |

yeah, well i did aerosol it pretty soon after i trapped it, but i did that with another moth, and after a day it flew away when i checked to see if it was dead. so to be sure with this one i left it for 3 days. the aerosol probs did it, but i cant know for sure, btw the glass was solid plastic i couldnt see through, thats why i left it so long.

Sorry to hear about your friend, just remember God doesn't give you more than you can bear.
I see the contrast, to me it was like a quickening. Like things are so sped up, busy, and blurred, you can't necessarily focus 100%. How we're so busy we don't reflect on life, even though death is all around us. You have a good eye! |

I got a few pics....I look at it as they have their own little world, what makes them happy, what they are afraid of, what they have to do to survive, just like us. And only one life, so think about that when you step on the next bug, just because you think he is gross, or he is crossing your path, doesn't give you the right to take it's life. Now that's not to say, I will kill them if I have to, in the house etc...but lots of times, if I see a spider, that's not too big, or poisonous, I will catch it in a napkin or something, take it outside and let it go....can't help it, that's just me!
![]() In one of these pics, I saw something, I have never seen before, a garden spider (in my neck of the woods, the older folks call them writin' spiders) eating a small lizard. And after that, I saw it happen 2 or 3 times. Never knew they was that BAD!
