Desi influence.

I've been listening to Suburbs of Goa (this link will open your music player and begin playing, caution) and it's some neat shit.

Now I know this is influenced by the style of south Asian music and is by no means representative of that area further than that.

Awesome musical styling though. I was wondering if perhaps any of you could give us a break down of the types of instruments commonly used to produce some of the more distinct melodies and rhythms you hear in the music.

I've often been fascinated by the subcontinent every time I see film and photos of the people and places as well. I've put a visit on the short list of things to do before I die, may live forever now since it isn't the touristy things I would want to see and since I don't know anyone that lives there and so far I'm too broke to be a world traveler.

I'm not 100% on what your question is. Are you talking about the ambient aspect or the flutes/harps/etc?

I'm interested in the hardware, some of the neat shit, other than the sitar.

Indian classical music is principally based on melody and rhythm, not on harmony, counterpoint, chords, modulation and the other basics of Western classical music, and such the instruments are designed with that in mind.

There's the tabla, the basic drum set

Dhol, double sided drum

Harmonium, like a hand or foot accordion

Tambura, like a fretless sitar

Veena, also similar to sitar but usually curved

Shehnai, like an oboe

Those are the most common forms, each has their own variations as well.

Classical if you're looking to get in touch with your spiritual side, modern if you want to dance. Songs usually start out slow and end up quite energetic.

Here's one of the most popular Bollywood songs:

Of course, the ever popular, more westernized Jai Ho from Slumdog

Seb Fontaine started incorporating a lot of "GOA" style instrumentals and beats in ot his music before the style was really defined by some of the more recent DJ's. As a result theres a lot more "un produced" Desi style music in his stuff, he mixes some beats over the top a bit but other times he just works it into his mix and lets the GOA style stuff play on its own sans any effects or mixing, its pretty cool. If you want to check him out try Prototype 2,3,4 with 3 being the most prevalent if memory serves. also on Paul Oakenfolds "Another world" disk 2 there's 1 track which starts out with a gentle citar and a womans voice, as she speaks telling you the story of the origins of the GOA movement and the early midnight beach parties the music builds up behind her voice and just as shes finishing the song gets into full swing.

If youre feelin this stuff I'd try both of those.

On a related topic, why did Bombay change its name to Mumbai?

By the late 20th century, the city was known as Mumbai or Mambai to Marathi speakers and as Bambai in Hindi, Persian and Urdu. The English name was officially changed to Mumbai in November 1995. This came at the insistence of the Marathi nationalist Shiv Sena party, that had just won the Maharashtra state elections and mirrored similar name changes across the country. However, the city is still commonly referred to as Bombay by many of its residents and Indians from other regions as well.

Trust me, Cuba is on that list as well.

It's the music and the food that draws me in, anywhere.
