It makes me sad to know that nothing I do in my life will ever be as badass as this
Project Excelsior - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
![]() Joe Kittinger parachuted from 19.5 miles above the Earth. It's a feat almost so incomprehensible to imagine that it kind of makes the "Man on Wire" guy look like a coward by comparison. Dude rode a balloon into the literal stratosphere and then jumped out of it more than 100,000 feet in the air, free-fell for four and a half minutes (reaching a top speed of 614 mph) and then parachuted into the New Mexico desert.

I saw a thing on TV where a guy did the same thing, over the Jordanian desert, but with a hang glider. From where he jumped, he could see every country bordering Jordan. People are nuts, but they're nuts in pretty impressive ways.

The first test, Excelsior I, was made on November 16, 1959. Kittinger ascended in the gondola and jumped from an altitude of 23,300 m (76,400 ft).[1] In this first test, the stabilizer parachute was deployed too soon, catching Kittinger around the neck and causing him to spin at 120 revolutions per minute. This caused Kittinger to lose consciousness, but his life was saved by his main parachute which opened automatically at a height of 3,000 m (10,000 ft).

Do you think when hejumped out in the stratosphere he fell slower because he was that far up?
I wonder if it's quiet all the way up there.

Yeah, there was some documentary on it, and it was apparantley totally silent for the first few minutes, then he literally hit a solid wall of air and was just about deafened/knocked out.
