Anybody here know anything about septic tank systems?

I got this guy who wants to charge me like $3K to hydro-jet my leach field, but when I look online, they say you can fix a failing leach field with enzyme chemical additives. If any of you know anything about this subject, I could use some advice, because I don't shit (no pun intended) about septic tanks.

Thanks,

The Rev

For 3k I'd get a report from another builder first for sure.

To my knowledge, enzyme stuff only speeds up the process that goes on in your actual tank. "hydro-jetting" your leech field would be to rid it of clogs/backup. In which case, enzymes are not going to really make much of a difference in a timely matter there. I've never actually had to pay for the household septic duties (ahaha, I only add doodies)... but I would shop around for prices.

What the guy's telling me is, the leach field is clogged with solids of one kind or another, and they have to blast it out with high pressure water and chemicals to get it draining again. There's no flooding, so the field hasn't failed. It just isn't passing water into the ground.

My last tenant used to flush all kinds of weird shit down the toilet, so this is not a totally unplausible situation. I have no idea how my parents cared for it before, either, and I'm assuming that my dad didn't do too much, knowing how he was about shit like that.

My only concern is that maybe some kind of chemicals might be able to unclog it. The guy tells me no, but various ads on the internet say otherwise. I checked out the BBB to see if the company is shady, and there was no bad report.

Seriously, I am NEVER going to own a home after this. Fucking things are money pits.

Is it effecting your drainage or flushing ability?

Smell?

Your problem is that the tank isnt flowing out into the leech field? I'm just wondering how that manifests as a tangible problem for you and your family.

We can work through this rev. I feel like as the originator of the Geeno Challenge, I have some amount of responsibility towards this situation.

Tell me about it. My house was built in 83, when I moved in everything was still original. Of course, being a first time homeowner, I had the luck of moving in right around the time everything started to need replacement. I moved in here about 3 years ago and since then I've had to get the roof re-done, replaced all the windows (not cheap!) and put in a new furnace, not to mention various other little things that require alot of time and money to straighten out.

of course, it would have been a bit less painful if my wife would let me do the work myself, but for some reason she thinks if you don't work in *insert profession here*, you can't do it yourself. (which is infuriating because I've reshingled many a roof)

Still, it's kind of nice having your own little peice of property to chill on, I like to sit in my backyard and just chill with a joint, because I can.

$3,000 for what amounts to running a hose down a pipe (yeah, I know, it's a little more complicated) so I'm with giles, get a second opinion.

It's a depressed economy, you can prolly get this shit taken care of cheap with a bit of bargain shopping.

i've worked for the septic guy on the island here for years

and everything he does is not cheap

prolly why he paid me 25$ an hour

anyway all theyre gonna do is kinda like a colonoscopy pressure washer snake full of hot water down to the clog

hot water and pressure

draino type chemicals could help but really all it is is super hot water and pressure
