probably because in it's time, the game did.

my son still has the collectors edition books of both myst and riven.

I liked the graphics and the peicing of a puzzle feel myst had.

but then again I loved megaman too.

I still remember when my mom got me a copy of Riven from a garage sale about 4 years ago, i tried to like it but i just ended up lying to her and said she did good. It made me feel good on the inside that she thought "oh computer game, he'll like this" so i gave it a chance, didn't really appreciate it much but it's the thought that counts. So the game is all about solving the damn machine puzzles then? I was waiting for just a LITTLe action
