The Burning Man Project

Just stumbled onto this thing. Apparently it's a yearly week long event held in the desert outside San Francisco. It's some art festival or something along those lines.

Anyways wanted to know if anyone has been, did you enjoy it, and what was the experience like? Where did you stay, how much did you spend? Stuff like that. In 2011 it's on August 29th, which is one day after my birthday. So I'm thinking birthday trip for me and would like to know a lot more about it.

For those who have NO clue what I'm talking about.

Found some cool pictures here...

Anyways, I'm thinking this is a prime opportunity for an ounce of dank, some 'cid, and a camper or something. Maybe some yahookans might be interested in doing something?

I've always wanted to go, but it would cost me a shitton to get out there. And as great of an experience as it is, I realized I'm not interested in doing copious amounts of drugs anymore, and the idea has kinda fallen by the wayside.
I hope you get there though if it's really in your heart to do it. Don't let it just be an idea. Make it happen.

It's east of Reno in the middle of the desert. Everyone camps and that is included in your ticket. You need to be prepared with water, food and shelter to last for several days and it will be hot and windy. My kid lives a few miles from there and is a member of the Nevada Highway Patrol and like he sez if your a dumb fuck liberal you might enjoy yourself there.

So to the people like v3d4, whom have went, could you take a little bit of time and elaborate the experience and some of the finances put into the trip? I'm seriously planning this, and would actually prefer some insight from a yahookan over google reviews (Which I am doing also by the way).

I'm mainly interested in knowing a pretty close estimate to how much money I should bring for the festival. Not counting airline tickets and a car rental.

And fishdick, why does one have to be a dumb fuck liberal to have fun at a festival? You need to stop trying to be hard all the time and relax.

besides coffee and possibly ice, and "maybe" drugs, there isnt really anything to spend money on at burning man. having said that, i dont recommend buying any drugs for money while youre there. either bring what you can with you or get it somehow before going into black rock city. thats my advice.
(edit: or barter/trade for whatever you want. if someone only wants money, dont deal with them)

you need to bring everything with you that youre going to want/need while youre there, (read the survival guide) and youll have to take it all away with you too. so that should be the major part of your budget if we are not talking about travel expenses.
depending on your travel arrangements, you will probly want pocket money for any time you spend in reno/sparks, but unless you go shopping or spend more than a day, im guessing a few hundred dollars should be enough for a meal or two plus cocktails and candy/gum/cigarettes/parking.

aside from the gas station, there is no place worth going in gerlach besides getting a burger and beverage at the fabulous Bruno's Country Club. also the ravioli is great. please be polite/ best manners when you are there.

here is something you should think about: when you are leaving black rock city and going back into the world, if you are driving by the time you get to reno you will be very tired and want to stop for the night. srsly. you can choose a big casino hotel or cheapo motel but it is worth it to go someplace comfortable and wash the playa out of your butt crack with many many gallons of hot water.

as to the experience: i dont want to say anything really. youl have to find out on your own because it is different every time and different for everyone. and words cant explain it anyway

ok a couple more thoughts

the experience is not the same as a music festival where you go and drink and drug and stand or sit and there is a stage(es) and you watch a show. there arent any spectators, only participants.

read the survival guide

bring something, or lots of little somethings that you can give to people you meet. the weirder the better.
giving weird gifts can enhance your burn experience so much. i can not stress this enough.

you must already be committed to picking up garbage and completely cleaning up after yourself and cleaning/ picking up anything you find that is matter out of place (MOOP) before even going. you just have to. if you are not prepared for that then just dont go.

here is a playa-wear project idea:
get shitloads of glow sticks (like 100 or more) and make a skirt out of them or sew them on to a pair of shorts / t-shirt and then go out at night and ask participants to light your sticks
-they might still be glowing pretty good the second night

when the sun comes up on the playa it is intense, it shoots from close to the horizon and creeps up and goes in your eye. this is the time to drink a bloody mary with shot of tobasco

there is dust. there is not much talk about the dust, but whole volumes could be written about things which have been destroyed by dust, the inevitable alkaline taste of it in your mouth, and the constant reality of dust in and on everything, and the horrible thing it does to any open wound, bandaged or not.

read the survival guide

do a project. next years theme is "rites of passage"
keep it simple, but think of something you can do or get involved in someone else' project. (read about this on the Bman website) you are not going just to see what other people can do. you are going to do something together with other people.
of course you can go without a commitment to a specific project and just join in to whatever you find, but i guarantee you will wish you had brought something to share. it doesnt have to be a 30ft mirrored unicorn that shoots fire out of its butt. but something. just think about it.

sunblock is so important.

maybe more thoughts later

youre welcome guyz

i thought i didnt have a lot to say /didnt want to say a lot
but once i started thinking about it i began to see reminders all around me. here is a couple more thoughts:

we have all heard the old saying "its not the destination, its the journey" and in the case of Bman i would say that the journey to black rock city is every bit as important as the time spent there. once you arrive on the playa, you will realize that instead of arriving, you journey has really only begun.

after you spend some time in black rock city, you may find that all your life you have been living in a fake world, and everyone (yourself included) has been forced to go along with the fakeness without even realizing it. you do not have to go along with the fakeness in black rock, because it is a city in the real world. this is why, when you get to the main gate of the city, the burners there may greet you saying "welcome home" and many people say "its good to be home".
when you enter into the gates of the city, first lay down on the playa and roll in the dust. then ring the bell. you are home

there is difficulty and there is discomfort. there are temperature extremes. there are white-outs. sometimes there is rain. when there is rain there is mud. there is hard work to do and there is sacrifice. there is constant sound and it is usually very very loud.
there are incredibly strong winds that can carry away anything that is not securely tied or staked down. there is danger everywhere in black rock city. people get injured. people die.

I
impossible and amazing coincidences happen
in a place where so many imaginations
are set free to go in all directions
the unexpected can happen
at any moment

II
get a big wooden crate
put in a lawnmower engine
put in some random scrap metal
put in a dead vacuum cleaner and a dildo
put in a cooler with a whole lot of ice and beer
paint on the side of the wooden crate "please build me"
leave it somewhere in black rock city and see wtf gets built

III
get a plastic bucket $2
get a roll of chicken wire $15
get a gallon of elmer's glue $12
get a whole heap of newspapers for free
get two different bright colors of spray paint $8
get a set of battery powered christmas lights $15
you might think "damn thats $60 wasted for nothing"
drag all that crap out to the playa and make it into awesome
