Former weapon storage area
![]() This is an old aircraft munitions depot about an hour away from my house. My dad used to take me there when I was little and the things that lie beyond the fence have always fascinated me. I say old, because it's not entirely abandoned. The facility is located on a wildlife sanctuary and while you park at the entrance of the bunker complex, the trials runs through the woods around it and seems to keep a lot of foot traffic away. Large, complex padlocks an intricate system of doors and threatening signs make the front gates very intimidating. But after years of decay and rust, the 12' tall barbed wire fence afforded us an easy access just 200 yards up the line. Security is minimal. There are signs of current use as most of the large block buildings are used to store wildlife management equipment for the state and several of the garages have recently registratered and inspected cars and trucks. It was also Sunday afternoon. It's usually the best time to do things like this. There was something wrong with this building. Nothing looked right about it. Most of the lines we no longer straight. The one door that was ajar had it's top bent open and the bottom was almost closed. Some doors were chained closed. There was one (and only) large square window in the second story that was wide open but we couldn't see inside. We didn't make it back to this building. ![]() This is the building we entered. There are garage doors, but I doubt they work. ![]() This truck is marked "For snow removal only". ![]() ![]() There is very little graffiti. It doesn't look like many people come here: ![]() This is small storage building with open garage bays. I didn't take a close look at this tractor but like most of the other equipment there, it seemed to be in good shape. ![]() The rest of the building is in disrepair. Besides what appears to be a chemical hood, there is not much indication of what the building was used for besides these little shiny, rusty pieces of steel about the size of a ruler laying around: ![]() There are also no lights in the building: ![]() ![]() You can make out about half of the bunkers. There are two rows of bunkers (back to back) and a road running down either side: ![]() There are dozens of block buildings just like this one littering the compound. Inside is filled with rocks and has a smaller concrete foundation in the center. There are old electrical leads and bolts coming out of the concrete. It looks like something very heavy was mounted there by the water marks on the ground (lots of wasps, too): ![]() Most of the doors are wide open: ![]() ![]() Which doesn't surprise me considering how thick they are: ![]() Most of the bunkers have visible markings on the outside and are similar to this: ![]() About half of the bunkers don't have provisions for blast doors, but the garage style doors are very heavy and operate on a chain pulley. The bunkers with blast doors either have theirs removed or are retracted. Some are a little more closed than others: ![]() Most of the doors are locked in this fashion. If you're tall and clever enough, you can lift the whole locked mess up and partially open the door. Some opened enough that I could fit under and some only opened enough to get my camera lens under ![]() But a few were locked like this: ![]() ![]()

All I could think of when I saw some of those bunkers is, Damn, if I could just run some power into those, it would be perfect for a grow op. I mean, if there wasn't wildlife workers around too. *sigh* Too bad though.

Honestly, those bunkers give me the creeps. They remind me alot of the replica gas chamber I saw at the Museum of Tolerance in L.A.

I live about 30 minutes from Pease and it's still open. There's biotech research firms there and still a ton of air traffic. I was up there at the Redhook brewery on the premises and I saw a C-130 doing touch and go's. It gotta be the most active "closed" base I've ever seen, granted a lot of what I saw could be commercial planes there's still a lot of activity there.

I'm just going by google, living on the other side of the planet and what not, but apparantley the base was shut in 1991 paving the way for an Air National Guard refuelling wing, and an International Trade Port, so sounds pretty active, albeit not an Air Force Base.

I just though it was cool that what started as a major blow to the local economy has resulted in more work for people and what was a military base aka a black hole for tax dollars has become a source of revenue.

I wasn't going to disclose the name because of how untouched the place is but that's pretty good considering you live on the other side of the world and all. Did you just start looking at all the airports around where I live?
The base is very active. When my father was still fishing he would see A-10 Warthogs flying out of Pease all the time. Seeing a pair of Warthogs flying over you is fucking awesome. You can go watch the tankers take off and land when they are. You're basically right on though. I think 6 or so tankers are parked at the far end of the runway (relative to 95) and there are some serious pipelines that run throughout the [active] facility. They usually hold an air show at the end of the summer, which I definitely recommend going if you're in the area. Kitch, I guess I don't need to PM you the location but if you go there please don't vandalize the place and please don't tell a bunch of people. I've never been to the Nahant bunkers. Is it legit?

The last time I was there was about 2 years ago and a lot of the bunkers are sealed with concrete. If you want to head north to Rye there's Odion point where there's still the turntables the coastal defense cannons were set on as well as some bunkers that you can get into with very little trouble. Theres also the remnants of a coastal defense base in Truro on the cape. I've never been but from the pics it looks really cool.

looks as tho most of the bunkers that are in tact are used for perhaps leased storage.
that type of bunker is reqiured for storage of commercial grade pyrotechnics/fireworks and gun shops for storing amunition. would also make a nice quiet apartment/growroom.

yeah the nahant bunkers are really chill, supposedly used to have tactical nukes down there. It's up inside Bailey's hill, and there's a couple ways in still open although they do bulldoze em all the time. bring a flashlight it's pitch black.
