Home from the E.R.
Spent the afternoon at the hospital with my darling Gracie, seems she caught the flu and it really beat her up, vomiting and the trots and her migraines aren't helped by power puking going on. Really moves a persons blood pressure trying to turn yourself inside out. Usually we don't sweat the common shit but with her cancer scare and diabetes, now we think about the doc's office a little sooner.
Some salt water I.V. with a lovely little cocktail of Compazine and Morphine for the nausea and headaches and another medicine what name eludes me at the moment to deal with what brought us in although doc said it sounds like the worst part is done and gone. She is sleeping peacefully now, first time in a week or so and I'm so very thankful for that. Tomorrow I'll trek to the pharm for her migraine meds and she can rest another day, luckily our 'sorta daughter' is here for a few days with the baby and she is quite helpful. So my end is good. They brought in a guy, OD on script drugs, one of the rooms near ours. He was combative and fought the E.R. staff and the paramedics until he lost consciousness. It was rough, I met two twenty five year old security guards who were rotated into the hospital a week ago from a nine month stint at a vacant industrial complex, they were recruited to help because it seems that all of Kaiser is staffed by tiny Filipino women. If they don't both quit tonight I'll be surprised, it was something they clearly hadn't signed on for. They were still working on the guy when we left, I asked the R.N. who discharged us if it looked like he was going to be okay and she assured me someone got him help in time. Be careful guys, yeah? What ever you do and wherever you do it, be careful. By the way, Gracie is the only one in the house to get her flu shot, the boys and I had the sniffles, Nyquil to the rescue. Good night folks...

Way to go, Pops.
I'm Yahooka Proud for you, and of you. We had Little Wing in for some minor surgery when she was about 1 1/2. I have a very hard time with hospitals, getting better but still, I don't do well while I'm there. That's some great kind of news about your daughter. |

Kinda daughter, we have two. Sort of had a huge hand in raising them after their mom flaked like you really can't believe but that's their story to tell.
By the way, Gracie is my wife...

Okay, change out the nouns where you need too, and the post still reads as intended.

migraines are pretty much the worst. i have great respect for anyone that can deal with them with enough capacity to NOT go to the hospital every single time. i only went twice to the hospital for migraines. one of those times i was losing feeling in my extremities which was kind of concerning.
give gracie my best wishes. seriously. how long has she had migraines?

Well, we have been married for 21.5 years so I can accurately tell you, at least 22.5 years. They have been better and worse for stretches, sometimes she'll have debilitating months, sometimes she'll go a year or two without much of anything. The worst part is they have no idea why you get migraines, they have little to no idea how to alleviate the symptoms without zombifying the patient and they certainly have no idea of how to cure it. We can't find a trigger or a relationship or even a pattern. There's no tumor, no aneurysm, nothing. We've looked. All they can do is toss pills at her and tell her avoid light, noise, life pretty much. I used to give her shit, not understanding what she was going through until we made a trip to Vegas in July to see friends and I found that temps above 115 will trigger migraine headache like symptoms in this little white duck, I would have rather my head just exploded and it was over with than deal with what I imagine was about 25% of what she can go through. It's fuckin' scary.

yeah. i have been through more or less the exact same shit. if you haven't tried these already, out of the thousands of things i tried, here is a list of what definitely works:
-glucocortical steroids (terrible side effects, amazing anti-inflammatory properties) -regular botox treatments from a neurologist who specializes in migraines about every 6-8 weeks -fast acting opioids, and a strong long acting NSAID everything else is a load of shit and doesn't actually do anything. i am extra lucky in that my migraines are "most similar" to an even less understood type of migraines (vertebral basilar migraines), which bring it with the wonderful joy of vertigo. i have had no properly functioning sense of balance since i was 19. migraines are some weird shit

Man, I HATE getting sick like that. I hope she's feeling ALOT better. BTW, cannabis is great for migraines.
(Kind of a fucked up situation, because my wife gets them, but can't smoke due to fear of random drug testing. This world is nuts.) ![]() The Rev |

gotta disagree with you rev. although it has some mild anti-inflammatory properties, it definitely doesn't help the migraines. it does help the side effects of the more nauseating medications, but does nothing for an actual migraine.

Yeah, that's her biggest problem, with the migraines come the nausea and if she takes the meds, it will cause her to vomit which kind of defeats the purpose of the medicine. She had a prescription for Maxalt which is one of those stick it on your tongue and watch it magically vanish pills, they seemed to work okay because she could actually take the medicine but her doctor decided the Imitrex was better for her headaches.
The doctor is wrong. Have to make a trip over to the pharmacy and schedule her an appointment with her PCP in a bit while I'm there. Another $40 copay on top of the $150 a month premiums from us and the $600+ her job kicks in, plus $180 for an E.R. visit. Yeah, we're healthy, broke as fuck but healthy.

i am glad i have good insurance. my neurologist told me that if i take migraine abortants like imitrex, i will pretty much collapse and die. so i really can't say much about them.
i would rather be incapacitated by medication than a migraine. has she ever tried to have a toke for the nausea? i would say, with only one exception, that ALL doctors i went too (in the double digits) know almost nothing at all about migraines. botox is really really expensive compared to what you are talking about (think single treatment price = the total amount in the above post), but it really does work. Botox for Migraine botox for migraines - Google Search
