There's a really interesting NatGeo thing that Lisa Ling does that shows the mentality of the people there. There are these tales of the Grandpa Dear Leader and current Dear Leader doing all these miraculous things that the people just eat up like gospel. It's like a population of children that have never been told there's no Santa Claus.

I've heard sometimes when people defect from north korea they have a bit of a culture shock because all of a sudden they realise a lot of the stuff they were told their whole lives isn't true, like south korea starting the korean war.

North korea even lies about the trivial stuff, like that kim jong-il regularly hits several holes-in-one when he plays a round of golf or that he invented the hamburger.
