My wife and I almost got in a fight watching this, because she's a veteran and was inclined to defend the actions of the Americans more than I was. It is a pretty provocative program, and worth seeing.

It was alot of little things, but the tipping point was where one of the soldiers was talking about doing something for the locals so that "they wouldn't be mad at us" for accidentally killing a few innocent people in some crossfire. My wife defended them as doing their job, and I was pissed because I knew if it were the other way around, and those killed were Americans, her POV would be quite different. We never actually got to really arguing tho. I just went to bed.

As a soldier, on the ground, fighting every day.

How do you reconcile that in your head, how do you wake up every day and think 'Okay, I'm securing American freedom by killing Afghans on the streets of Kabul' when what you are really doing is occupying a foreign land where shit wouldn't be going on if we weren't there causing it to happen.


How do you as a soldier reconcile in your head that while you are in a daily firefight and have to watch your back for fear of it getting blown off, knowing you could die at any second, the folks that sent you there are fighting tooth and nail to secure tax cuts for the rich folk profiting off your blood, your sweat, your tears while your parents hold bake sales to send you proper armor and their children are safe and sound behind the money.

How can you deal with the fact that as soon as your tour is over and they have no more use for you, you'll be swept aside like every other veteran of capitalist warfare.

my buddy was stationed at restrepo for a year. told me a bunch of crazy ass stories. he had an rpg blow up next to him and knock him off a mountain, once at the bottom he had to deal with enemy and friendly fire. pure shithole.

I really enjoyed the film, seen it twice infact. i really like how its about as unobjective as a documentary can get.

it was interesting actually, the first time i saw it here in London, and the second time was in Poland at a film festival. In Poland the audience seemed to be a lot less forgiving towards the Americans.
