Exclamation Black Bears guarded B.C. grow-op: (Christian Lake)

They face 1 year in jail....for feeding the Bears.

Quote:
The docile bears “were essentially large dogs,” he said. “It was evident that the occupants were feeding the bears dog food.”

There was no evidence the bears were also being fed marijuana.

Raid on B.C. marijuana grow-op bears big surprise - The Globe and Mail

Quote:
Police in southeastern B.C. have raided a marijuana grow operation that was apparently guarded by black bears.

Officers conducting the raid two weeks ago at Christina Lake found a property with two residential buildings and a fenced-off grow-op with about 1,000 plants, police said Tuesday.

But they also found about 10 bears that the owner appeared to be using to keep people from stealing any pot plants, said RCMP Sgt. Fred Mansveld.

"[Officers] soon noticed the bears were docile and tame," Mansveld told CBC News. "One of them jumped on our unmarked car for a while. But it soon became apparent they were habituated to the grow operation."
Quote:
The woman accused of running the grow-op has been feeding the bears for years, one neighbour said.

Quote:
Christina Lake is about 350 kilometres east of Vancouver.

I think they could have used a more rigorous screening procedure to find more able bodied bears.

Every one knows bears have infamously poor work ethic.

But hey, when you are working for peanuts, there isn't much incentive to have much follow through when the shit gets rough

That I have no clue about. Lord knows there are plenty of place to take them to reintroduce them to the wilds.

it sounds like these bears weren't pets, they just hung around for the food and could leave. i doubt the animal instinct to find food has died off in a few years.

yeah but....

a fed bear is a dead bear. I really don't think it's fair that's how it works, but I guess it does make the most sense for the safety of humans.

Yea dude... but BC is big. A fed bear in the Eastern States is one thing.... but there is a lot of place to take a baited BC bear in my opinion. And having lived in BC and having seen this done..... I don't know.... ..... there is a basis for this assertion somewhere in there

it says they were basically tame...

no matter where you put one of them in BC it's eventually gonna smell some human garbage, get nostalgic for the old days back on that nice little pot farm and wander on back to civilization.

maybe a zoo would be the best option?

Living in BC and not expecting a bear to get in your garbage is absurd, period.
Having a neighbourhood bear is part of living most places in BC. Even in the out skirts of most cities there are black bears wandering around

I see your point, but I'm willing to guess they'd just as likely consider moving them to the far unpopulated northern parts before making an end of life decision.

Along with the moose it's surprisingly not as alarming as one might think. People tell each other, kids are watched more closely and everyone is aware of not running up on or scaring the animal. Doesn't mean shit doesn't happen and animals are euthanized from time to time.

Bears are right outside town on the prairies, they just have waaay bigger uns in BC.
Should train wolves, they can be more aggressive towards humans

If I may shed some 'Light' for I know the taste!

Young Bear are considered to be very tasty....a very red meat mind you....and regardless of the fact that Black Bear consume around 70% vegetation ...while the Grizzly consumes only maybe 10-20% vegetation...they are still considered 'Bottom Feeders'.

I'm sad to say hunters are more after the fur and a few select body parts....and...the meat goes,....in most cases to 'ROT'.

Pretty greasy meat to be honest, but as with deer it is awesome when cooked by someone who knows what they are doing.
