Angry Correction Canada hires first MUSLIM Woman....(No contact)

If this thread should be in A&P....feel free (Mod) to move it!!

I heard about this on CFRA 580....you know L.Green?? The part that gets me is that they are going to use 'special procedures' especially for her...

Quote:
OTTAWA - The Correctional Service of Canada has hired its first female Muslim prison guard who will wear a hijab specially designed for the dangerous institutional setting, QMI Agency has learned.

CSC confirmed the recruit is now on her second week of a nine-week training program in Ontario and will be placed as a guard in a men¹s federal penitentiary when she's done.

As a correctional officer, she will be permitted to wear gloves and long sleeves to avoid skin-to-skin contact with male offenders in accordance with her religious and cultural practices, but has been told she may be required to remove them if circumstances require it.

"It has required some research on our part to ensure her religious and cultural needs are accommodated within the parameters of our requirements for safety and security of institution and staff," said CSC national spokesman Graham Andrews.

After processing the recruit's application, the CSC formed a working group to work out ways to address both the employer's and the employee's needs.

A special hijab head covering is being developed that will come off easily if an inmate grabs her, instead of giving the offender physical control.

Efforts are also underway to obtain equipment such as a breathing apparatus that works with the hijab.

CSC and the employee have also established a mutual understanding about physical contact with men, which is prohibited under the Muslim faith.

"During exercises, she is wearing gloves and a long-sleeved shirt so that she doesn't have to have contact with males in that situation. But she is fully aware that in an institutional environment, there may come a time when she does have to have skin-to-skin contact with males. She is aware of that," Andrews said.

The employee has also worked with CSC to develop a schedule for prayers during break times that respects her religious requirements while also fulfilling the expectations of any other participant in the rigourous training program.

Andrews said in past, CSC chaplaincy and human resources have worked with Sikh employees to develop special turbans suitable for the prison setting.

There have also been special allowances for a replica kirpan to be worn inside the penitentiary.

Andrews does not believe there has ever been a job application from a woman who wears a burka, but said any request would be evaluated in the overarching context of institutional safety.

As an employer, CSC strives to create a diverse work force that reflects both the prison population and Canadian society at large, Andrews said, noting 6% of staff are visible minorities, 7.9% are aboriginal, 4.6% are people with disables and 47.6% are women.

I'm afraid I don't see the 'trouble' PharmGirl, what do you mean?

*edit:

They've already done this for Sikh's needs.

And I know they accommodated many many many religious practices of the prisoners into life in the prison.

In BC they has places for sweats and the like, which I suppose I'd never even considered, but would wager that it's Canada wide to 'allow' this ritual to happen, even though I see it as more of a 'right'.

So I suppose I wonder why a 'hat provision' is such a big thing here?

Also... I think it's fine to post this here unless you feels it's political rather than just something to talk about?

I went to HS and was really good friends with a muslim girl who wore a hijab.

She was anything but muslim, like full blown goth, you know the makeup triple wide jeans chains black nails etc..etc..etc..., but she still wore her hijab.

So she went to college for correctional services (in qc you can go to cegep which is like college for that)
and after 3 years they wouldnt give her a job because she refused to remove her hijab. kind of a bummer eh? she was all over the news and everything.

Anti-Muslim inmates who are doing life and have nothing to lose can target her because A-she's a woman, and B-she's a muslim.

I think the bigger question is why a woman would want to enter into that kind of work field in the first place.

The days of women standing up to be treated equally are quickly passing, no one gives a shit if you want to play high school football with the boys or feel the need to drive a tank in the middle of a war zone.

Have at, enjoy.

If you are there just to prove a point, job well done now do what anyone with any intelligence would do and get the fuck out of there.

Dude, it's not 1950.... women work in prisons.

I don't see it as proving a point.... that wasn't included in the story and I don't know the woman.

Why women want to be guards? I don't know women who are guards, by I do know ones who work in prisons and they aren't there to prove anything, but only to help as they see the need, like anyone one else.

What does "Get the fuck back out there" mean?

If you don't like the news..... change the channel

Okay, first off.

People wrestle alligators, but almost never without an audience...

Get me?

Next.

If she was a guard at a womens facility would this even be an issue?

Would it matter she wants to wear traditional garb?

No, you know why?

Because it doesn't fucking matter.

What does her hijab have to do with the inmates?
I think the point (not that I necessarily agree) being made is that it's unfair for her to have to take it off if the "situation" warrants it - without that even being defined.

Men in prisons rape men, not just women. Women in prisons rape other women, too... so I'm not entirely sure why any of that matters.
And I'm guessing she's pursuing her desired career because..it's ... her desired career?

Scatter.... you talking crazy

I am not clear if that is the 'trouble in ever way' or what is being inferred here as the concern. I'm still interested to hear that.

*edit (although scatter you pose a good question which sounds like a shitty 'ace' the prison can keep up their sleeve.)

As a side note on 'Uniform':
A couple of years ago the military okay'd cornrows if I'm not mistaken.
Point being that society evolves and I think this is just a case of that.
As was the case with Sikh men, as guards, in turbans.

I doubt she is trying to 'prove' anything here more than we prove ourselves to our self... but I think that is just called fulfilling our dreams, marking achievement and the like...

The only thing I'm surprised over is that she's a woman guard in a man's prison. I thought they tried to keep them separated more.

I see nothing wrong in accommodating someones needs, within reason. I think it should be on her though, to make the hijab safe.

If she wants to pray on her breaks, that would be ok with me, as long as she wasn't getting more breaks than the others.

I see nothing wrong with wearing gloves and long sleeves, as long as she is not going to hesitate in her actions if something were to happen.

There are some snug hijabs that would actually make her head harder to grab than hair of any length.

As far as her breaks.... I believe that is pretty standard practice in Canada for people who need to pray to use an allotted amount of time each day for 'breaks' to use at their discretion. ie you get two 15s and a 30.... do what you will with that hours worth of time.

Praying only takes a couple of mins, probably less or the same as a smoke.

Here is a prayer schedule for Toronto, which fluctuates with the sun throughout the year. Muslim Prayer Time Schedule for Toronto Canada Just to give you an idea when these 'breaks' come up. And it's with in a range of time, not on the minute.
