Flashbacks to the 80's

Has anyone ever noticed on shows that do an 80's flashback that someone always has "Flock of Seagul's Guy Hair"? Just random people. Family Guy, the Wedding Singer. But in the 80's no one had Flock of Seagul's hair except the guy in Flock of Seaguls. Does anyone remember anyone in the 80's with Flock of Seaguls Guy hair? Besides the Flock of Seaguls guy?

Is it because (for the most part) the everyday fashion has not changed AT ALL since the 1980s, and writers need some visual shorthand to delineate the setting as the 80s?

My 14 year-old son wanted to dress up as a person from the 80s for Halloween, and sought my advice. At the time he was wearing a pair of Levis, Nike tennis shoes, and a Pink Floyd t-shirt.

The irony.

The 90s were better. Been repping the 90s since 1990.

born 1981...... although my wife is 5 years older than I, so I get to hear about the part of the 80s I missed .......or don't remember. I certainly remember this hairstyle although I was really surprised to learn of it's name

I think a tshirt, jeans and tennis shoes (could they still be considered "tennis shoes"?) has been the suburban teenage uniform since the '50s, just with different variations on the them. On the other hand parachute pants, high waisted pants for girls, the big poofed up hairdo, mullets, mesh shirts...you don't see that much anymore.

But I think you're right. It's a quick visual that gets right in your face and says "you're in the 80's now".

This thread was actually my SO's idea. She was hoping folks would find pics of people they know with the FOS 'do. Or at the very least tales of people with the FOS 'do.

Not at all. When you look back on the time period you grew up in, there's a certain sense of nostalgia. One that in the 80's I never thought I would have 20some years later. But I do, and so do the people that I know from that time. I think it's natural to think about the time you were coming up. For a lot of people it was when they were the most "free"...before mortgages, kids, car payments, bills. When you could have the most irresponsible fun.

But "better"? No. Not for me at least. I wouldn't trade the life I have now for the life I had then. Would I have done some things differently, do I have regrets from that time? Of course. I think everyone does. Hell, I can think of a dozen things that I did last week I'd have done differently today.

Not better, but the past is part of life.

For the younger people who don't remember what the 80s styles look like... keep your eyes pealed for "Today's new fashions" ....

I think along with health care, a solution for climate change, nuclear disarmament, feeding and educating the poor, we need to address the need for a universally accepted 'sarcasm font'.

I like to follow a 'sarcasm' post with an even more sarcastic '*' disclaimer at the bottom of the post.....

*this isn't sarcastic though, in this post/example.

I still wear Levi's and I have several Pink Floyd tee shirts to choose from. My sneakers, however, are Reebok's. I wore the same thing in the 70's too! (not the Reebok's, we all had those basic white tennis shoes and we colored them to our fancies. Mine were flags.)

I no longer have a mullet, but I must say it was fun to spike the top of my hair.

I had my kids in the 80's. Damn, I feel old.
