sucks for canada

200GB to 25GB: Canada gets first, bitter dose of metered Internet

if this is what the future of the internet in america looks like im thinking of donning my official Protest Suit and hitting the streets. Thats just fucking fucked.

I easily go through 25gb every day or two.

I'm kind of dumb when it comes to this.. How do you add up how much you most likely use?

I had a message from Rogers pop up on my browser telling me I'd reached the 25gb limit, and that every GB from now until the end of the billing period would be $4.

It's either continue with this level of service or 'upgrade'... bollocks.

thats another part of it, for the average internet user its a nightmare to figure out how much your using. theres apps and stuff, that are fairly complicated:

bandwitdth usage app - Google Search

and some ISPs have a "gauge" of some kind on their website that you can check to see how much youve used.

But damn, i watch so much youtube and upload so much shit (even legally) that 25 GB is nothing. Especially in this new age of Highdef where a dvd can be 25 gigs +

^how many movies do you guys watch on the average week?

il admit im a leisure junky so i watch a shit ton of streaming stuff like youtube/rapidshare as well as watching alot of TV on my laptop in bed. so i would really be fucked with this.

for casual internet users, though, even 25GB strikes me as a bit low. would not surprise me if at least half the consumers in canada go over that.

We do more shows mostly.... I'd say 30-60 mins 5/7 days. And I catch a documentary or two during the week which are usually 60-90 mins a piece.

Not sure who set up our account right now, that is, can't get on to the online bill

30-60 minutes each day?

a 30 minute high def show is about half a gig. so that means if you did nothing on the internet except watch 30 minutes of TV online a day, you would be spending about 3Gigs a week to watch TV. 3x4 weeks = 12 GB or

HALF your 25 GB cap

only on shows. if you watch 60 minutes a day you have spent your entire bandwidth cap for that month on watching shows.

Bullshit corporate interests should be ignored because the children are starving in africa? That is dangerous logic that, if applied to other industries, could lead to serious economic failures.

Its not a big deal, until you need to do some e-mailing for work and you cant get online because you hit your cap

The tech gods hadn't unleashed that Kraken yet....

Well.. I'm talking about the internet not other stuff or implications...

Do we know for a fact there isn't a provision made for businesses?

This also means that people will be using less power perhaps and who knows... speaking of speculative implications.... maybe fight obesity and dementia.... ??

the CRTC is easily the worst regulatory commission in the country. they completely ignore the interests of the public while getting on their knees for rogers and bell. they usually justify their stifling of open competition in the name of protecting canadian content and jobs, but they can't even open that can of bullshit on this one.

so why do they seem to only care about padding the profit margins of bell/rogers? i have no fucking clue. and i'd love for someone to give me a legitimate rationale, but i doubt i'll ever hear one.

The justification is that it seems Canadian ISPs cannot upgrade their networks fast enough with demand.

So instead of improving themselves, they're hobbling you.

Lol @ protecting canadian content by limiting canadian access to content.

Over here AT&T did that with their wireless networks, limiting to a 5 GB cap. They had people locked due to being the sole provider of the iphone. Now they're fucked since Verizon is getting it along with an unlimited data plan, and AT&T has been rated as the worst US network.

It's ok Canada, I can download your content for you and you can come over and watch it.

I'll be your digital diplomat.
