Fuck me dead I'm so glad I'm not living up there anymore.

Severe tropical cyclone or hurricane as you call it in the US, Yasi, is about to make landfall tomorrow night, predicted to hit the Queensland coast a bit more north from where I lived for a year and a half.

High level category 4 maybe 5, the size of half of whole Europe. Just the eye of the system is so big, when it's destructive west flank passes the coast it'll be calm and sunny for an hour, before winds of up to 280kmh pick up all the debris from the other side...

Even experienced storm chasers say that's not a storm to fuck around with, mass evacuations in place in many north qld towns. The prime minister and the bureau of meteorology say it's the biggest cyclone the country has ever seen...

Well it's FFA, on Yahooka.

I just fb-chatted to a girl I was with up there in Mackay, her dad covered all the windows with plywood and they got rid of all the loose shit lying around the house but they're staying at home and wanna sit through the storm.
Plenty of food and water, batteries torches a generator and hope that it wont turn more south, at the moment the predicted path of impact is Cairns and more north.

Cairns is like 1000km away from Mackay but this fucker is so big it's gonna affect up to 2000km of qld coast.

If it gets to category 5 it will be something
But it's 500kms wide now, so i'll probably get messy regardless.
I heard people up there are out drinking at the beach about now, some pubs still open
I suppose they're kinda used to it, but this could be the biggest in a lifetime.
I hope it blows out

im say many prayers for the people in the path of that monster. im happy to see that govt and civil servants are taking things seriously and working to keep folks safe with the military, etc... unlike another country in the face of another storm i could mention. Looks like we got spared from the worst, no reports of casualties yet, significant damage around the eye impact areas in Mission Beach and Tally (90% of buildings damaged), probably many crops lost...
Cyclone still category 2-3 inland, may cause significant flooding.

I guess very good preparation contributed to saving many lives. Props to QLD authorities!

The aftermath, a few villages copped it really badly, everywhere else huge relief, especially in big towns like Cairns and Townsville...
No casualties.
