There's only been 43, actually. Obama is the 44th president, but since Grover Cleveland was 22nd AND 24th, he got counted twice.

Nobody was appointed before Washington, BUT Washington was and still is the only president to be elected unanimously by the Electoral College.

Also, when Jefferson was running against Adams, they both refered to each other in the press as "howling hermaphrodite". Makes the Tea Party and their thinly veiled racism seem pretty tame. LOL
