The force is linearly proportional to the extension of the spring. So use the average force, which is half the force at the maximum extension.

i ought to say, i go the answers already.

i used force of spring = -1/2K(displacement)^2; k being the spring constant

it was an issue of the different paths that screwed up my answer. thanks though FG i do appreciate that tip

I always used to get into trouble over Ambiguity.

I would argue that in reality springs do not exert equal force thru their length of extention.

something like, When a spring is compressed or stretched, the force it exerts is proportional to its change in length.

some times it actually worked

mostly

it didn't.

Ah physics, I love physics.

It's where science and math intertwine to birth the secrets of the universe.

Yes, in the real world you're right. There usually is a range of extension which is pretty linear though.

thats actually what the equation i used says. the displacement is the distance that the spring is compressed or extended away from its equilibrium position. im sure in a higher level physics class they would employ caclulus to get more accurate answers using limits and the like.

thanks for looking everyone, i love science but i just met phyisics and im not sure how i feel about the guy yet

physics is scary when they give you the real integrals to be solved
