The force is linearly proportional to the extension of the spring. So use the average force, which is half the force at the maximum extension.

i ought to say, i go the answers already.
i used force of spring = -1/2K(displacement)^2; k being the spring constant it was an issue of the different paths that screwed up my answer. thanks though FG i do appreciate that tip

I always used to get into trouble over Ambiguity.
I would argue that in reality springs do not exert equal force thru their length of extention. something like, When a spring is compressed or stretched, the force it exerts is proportional to its change in length. some times it actually worked ![]() mostly it didn't.

Yes, in the real world you're right. There usually is a range of extension which is pretty linear though.
