I get the feeling that spanky is so emotionally invested in the kid because he is the kid....

nah, 18-early/mid twenties is about discovering yourself and your own preferences. before that age you simply arent equipped with the mental faculties to think for yourself.
in europe most kids take a year or two off before school, that makes complete sense to me what DOESNT make sense is to take kids who are not ready for an increasingly complex real world, expect them to know their life path at 18, and pile mounds and mounds of debt on them while they pay for an education that will probably not have alot to do with the profession they find themselves in in 20 years. theres a shit-ton wrong with our current system, and blaming the kids doesnt make sense. its the adults who create the system/framework, it should be the adults to blame if the system sucks. the adults are the ones who have the power to change it anyway. kids are always going to be kids. they will keep drinking and partying until you give them a valid alternative. (not teachers, fyi, i know thats personal for you nick. im talking about policy makers) ((not that drinking should be encouraged or respected, i think in fact drinking is a hindrance to discovering yourself and your own preferences and path.))

i would never doubt that one should take their early 20s to figure themselves out--I wish I hadn't waited until I was 25 to really 'get it'---nonetheless, the alcohol abuse, and even gambling abuse I am seeing from kids at 19-21 is troubling, if only because they are giving up before they've even started.
Major structural issues to deal with in any event.

And hey, try not to lament the time you had before 'getting it'... it was all a part of you getting it!

I know I'm at that age that Waves was speaking of at 18. I realized it like last year. I used to think I was just at the mercy of the world but then I realized I am my own person and I can control my future. It took me a long time to realize, but I'm glad I did when I did. Some times I meet people my age so naive I just can't help but think,"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Even though I've met people way more naive than myself, I still am aware that I am pretty naive myself. I try to compensate with modesty but it doesn't always work. |
