One of my little hobbies

Gold prospecting is just another of my little hobbies I've been holding onto this for a couple of years, and now, with gold a little above $1400 an ounce, the time has come to cash in my little bits of bright yellar stuff!

that is NEAT! I went prospecting as a kid with my folks up in the Yukon. It was a blast but never saw that much gold. Guess we missed the rush by a hundred years or so

Thanx ya'll...

You would be surprised, scientist say there is still 95% of the gold left on the earth...the old timers didn't have metal detectors and the kind of equipment we have now days....
There is gold almost every where. It's in every state in the US, except Kentucky and Hawaii. And a lot in Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil and lots of other places.....

There was so much found in one place in Brazil, people completely eroded away a whole mountain getting the gold out...
You have to know the places it hides, and it ain't easy gettin' it out, believe me. Takes lots of sore muscles, skinned knuckles, trekking through the wilderness etc...

I can't be sure the gold knows about political boundaries.... I bet there is a little gold creeping in along the edges !!!

Sage Tree - Nice stuff man. My Sis and her Hubby are really into this.
How'd you get into it?

I went to one of those pay to pan for gemstones places, and when I got home I did a search on some of the ones I had, and saw some links to gold prospecting clubs.

Mr. T - How long did it take to get all of that? Pretty cool.

Actually a few years, but I don't get to go too often, as it's a long drive.

The Rev - Let us know how much you get for it.

Will do...but not too many places to sell it, called a guy yesterday, gonna go see what he will pay, but I got a little bit more of some really fine stuff to pan out first. Hopefully this weekend.

farmergiles - that's a nice couple of nuggets at the bottom of the pic!

Well, I ain't a liar, I will say, I got those 2 nice pieces from some ore I bought from someone else, I didn't find them.

Mikey - how deep was most of that?

I got some from pockets of sand in the rock, that wasn't even in the water, and the deepest was standin' in a creek with water up to my neck, holdin' my dredge nozzle down as far as I could reach, about 4 feet.

Well...well...welll. ...wadda you know a fellow rock-hound~ In these parts the key is the ultra-mafic magmatic seggregations of the igneous rock. There was a gold mine in the area that once yielded 26 oz's of gold per ton of ore extracted...She's always mated or married to other heavy elements....she never parties alone.

gold mining has always interested me. I guess they used to burn the whole side of a mountain just so they could find the bed rock where to mine. I guess what interests me more is the history of it and how hard it used to be. These days it's not even interesting. I've gone panning a couple times but I was just sifting away and some black sand we found under very superficial rocks. So is that round one an actual nugget you found or just flakes smashed together?

I do think it would be amazing to find a nugget of any size, the most I've found are silly little flakes.

Didn't know that about the burning sides of mountains off, that's crazy.

Also when you guys are all talking about 'panning', are you talking about when you buy a bag of stuff and then put it upstream into a chute and then sift it when it comes down the chute in front of you? This thread makes me realize that a metal detector might actually be cool even if you don't find anything as valuable/cool as gold, gonna go check some out

Hey, how 'bout that? Well, I was in a club, not anymore, that had lots of black sands, with micro gold attached. They had it assayed at 4 ounces per ton of black sands.....but you had to use chlorine halide leaching to get it
Joined a new club, that has lots of nice quartz stringers, full of pockets and decomposing bedrock, but only got to go once, using my sluice box. Love to get back up there with my little 2" dredge

Actually they used to do a lot of hydraulic mining, which sucked. They would take a huge firehouse like nozzle and literally wash away the whole mountain, into sluices to catch the gold...believe me it ain't a piece of cake now days, you have to study the creeks and rivers and such and determine the best place the gold might be hiding, and that's no guarantee. There is a saying, "gold is where you find it" It's a nugget, but see above, I got that one out of some concentrates I bought.
