meltdown at three mile...er...Fukushim a Daiichi island....

man that sucks for japan. first their toyota pedals start sticking and now the main and backup generators at the nuclear plant failed at the worst possible time.

i know its a natural disaster and im tempering my snarkyness with some empathy for our japanese brethren... but this is some ironic shit.

if this is what happens when future tech savy 2nd largest economy japan has a huge earthquake just imagine what it would be like if the next one hit beijing or hong kong or sao paulo.

not exactly sure what that means, but my heart goes out to all those in japan etcetera etcetera.... and the question i have is simply...well ok i feel bad 99% but i just have to ask about the 1% - its like nuclear plants are pretty dangerous things- and they have safety valves and all sorts of fail safe things- so it seems like this one in japan had its main and backup system both fail.... and also the 3rd backup last line of defense battery is going to be dead in a few hours..... so without blaming japan , or any specific person.... it just seems like the whole world needs to look at nuclear power a lot more carefully.

look at what happened at 3 mile island.... a lot of stupid shit combined with human error combined with bad designs.... im not being anti american to say that.... hopefully in the 30 years since we've learned our mistakes and made them much much safer..... but then, here this is japan - the techiest place and most advanced place many thing on earth - and a disastor- admitedly a horrible one.... one for the recordbooks- totally takes out the nuke plant- AND its failsafes...

welll that tells me that we damn well better 1. design better failsafes in the future. 2. possibly reconsider nuclear power because its a lot less safe than u might think if the smartest engineers on earth designed a system to protect their plant and then when a disastor actually happened the system failed-- this is like a moon rocket- when its so important, u cant have failures.... and when u have one, it makes u reconsider if it can ever truly be safe.... ill tell u this- if japan cant build a nuke plant that doesnt melt down in 2011 with all the tech we have, they still cant build a plant to withstand earthquakes that actually are happening.... then what about a place like iran or pakistan or china or russia that are much less advanced technologically ? id be pretty worried about their reactors too.

nuclear power isnt all its cracked up to be- even if it works fine we still have waste that will take millions of years to not be toxically lethal to human animal and plant life.

Japan fears nuclear plant meltdown - Asia-Pacific - Al Jazeera English

Quote:
'No Chernobyl possible'

However, Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, said a major radioactive disaster was unlikely.

"No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the
reaction," he said.

"Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3 km radius."

Stop your fear mongering

Obama: U.S. Needs New Nukes - Energy Source - How we power the world - Forbes

awesomely pertinent article

"The President acknowledged that the U.S. has a lot of catching up to do in joining the nuclear renaissance. "Japan and France have long invested heavily in this industry. Meanwhile, there are 56 nuclear reactors under construction around the world: 21 in China alone; six in South Korea; five in India," he said.

What’s more, he said, "This one plant, for example, will cut carbon pollution by 16 million tons each year when compared to a similar coal plant. That’s like taking 3.5 million cars off the road."

yea 3.5 million cars off the road.. but another potential chernobyl.... perhaps we need to think of a better way

like frankly, chevy volts and the like powered by solar roofs on houses and garages and offices and ubiquitous renewable power that was pollution free, infinitely easier to use and less of a hassel, and totally self sufficient and would explode our economy. the solution is staring us in the face, and is so exponentially better than all the alternatives... all we need to do is fill in a tiny number of blanks and the future im dreaming of will be unlocked - and a handful of new billionaires will be made most likely.

This isn't just bad for Japan. The Earth's atmosphere is a finite space, and now there is even more radioactive shit in it. Really? Humanity is actually voluntarily irradiating their own living environment? They accept doing so as an option, a reasonable risk?

I got off on the wrong stop, somehow. That must be it.

well solar panels and wind are certainly cleanER than nuclear and oil and gas.

and by 2015 they will be cheaper and more reliable.

the key to any renewable is good enough batteries to allow for storage during peak times and use during low power gathering times.... once batteries reach the level they need to and already have started to. it will be a friggen renaissance....renai ssance i tells ye!!!!

Doesn't make it sound any less harmful.

If a 8.9 would hit 20miles off LA or SF I bet my life on it either of the two cities would be irreparably devastated with catastrophic impact on the whole country, at least twice worse then what it would do to Tokyo.

The other downside of it would be it would impact the rest of the world worse too.
