Ontario: Pickering nuclear plant reports water leak

Don't worry folks.... we're only in negligible danger!!!!

Pickering nuclear plant reports water leak - Toronto - CBC News

Pickering nuclear plant reports water leak

Quote:
Ontario Power Generation has notified Canada's federal nuclear regulator about the release of 73,000 litres of demineralized water into Lake Ontario at the Pickering A nuclear generating station.

The leak occurred at 11:30 p.m. ET on Monday at the plant located about 35 kilometres east of Toronto and was caused by a pump seal failure.

“The radiological risk to the environment and people's health is negligible,” the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission said in a statement.

The nuclear regulator and Environment Canada are monitoring the situation, the statement said.

Andrew Nichols of CBC News reported about the leak on Wednesday afternoon and said he spoke to an Ontario Power Generation spokesperson who told him the risk is minimal but that such leaks are not supposed to occur.

Nichols also spoke to Gordon Edwards of the Canadian Coalition of Nuclear Responsibility.

"In his words, 'What the hell is considered negligible?'" Nichols reported. "[Edwards] is concerned that it’s the nuclear industry that is telling you and I and telling the public what is considered to be negligible but he’s concerned that we don’t have a proper sense of what negligible is," reported Nichols.

Nichols also reported that the leak could be a concern because Lake Ontario is the main source of drinking water for millions of people who live along the lake.

The leak comes as the world is watching Japan's unfolding nuclear crisis, as multiple reactors face cooling system failures and possible meltdowns in the wake of Friday's earthquake and tsunami.
Pickering A is the first four reactors at the nuclear plant just east of Toronto. It went into service in 1971 and continued to operate safely until 1997, when it was placed in voluntary lay-up as part of what was then Ontario Hydro's nuclear improvement program.

Demineralized water is nothing to worry about, it's demineralized so it can't be activated as it's used for coolant.

You mean I could drink this type of water right out of the leak itself and be okay?

im guessing negligible means its not much more than what a person gets on a daily basis. (we get irradiated constantly by the sun and w/e else outspace has out there)

did you know flight attendants get way more radiation exposure during their lives because they spend more time high in the atmosphere where there is less sheilding from radiation?

It's probably more drinkable than the water already in Lake Ontario.

Seriously though, would this even make the news if not for Japan?

after it mixes with the lake water it will probably be bad for you. and no nobody seemed to care about chalk river, except for the fact that our ability to make money from selling medical isotopes was compromised.

In the Old Testament, didn't God make a covenant with Noah that he would not destroy mankind again, as he did in the Flood? If this is so, then there can be no End of Days, unless you're saying God is a liar...

Problem?

thats a very good question, and even tho it gives me an opportunity to preach, maybe its better if i tell you to not take my word but study the scriptures and find out for your self directly from God what God's word is.

u mad?

nah, I asked god the other night, he said he was just bullshitting Noah, and nuclear radiation was the way to go.

now how can you deny the word of god ?

Too bad there wasn't another nuclear facility leaking and making good headlines, because I'm SURE that it would have gotten some coverage then for sure.

Thanks Media

You again with a new water theory

Demineralized water is water free of minerals, duh. What that means is it is drinkable as I outlined in the other thread, but drinking it for prolonged periods of time can kill you.

You can buy demineralized water, but on the bottle you'll find a huge warning saying: "not for human consumption", you can use it in steam cleaners, irons or to top-up your car batteries, etc... Purpose is to save appliances from mineral deposits damage.

Also, water cooling the PC.

De-mineralized water dosn't conduct electricity. At least not at the voltage that PC's use.

Wait what are we talking about?

It's not like the PC is submerged in cooling water like a nuclear reactor , PC water cooling systems are completely isolated from any source of electric currents.
