Product review. FILA Skele-Toes
![]() So about a week and a half ago I found these on sale at Kohl's department store for $41.99 They only had them in the black and gray which is pretty okay so far but they are freaky enough coming at you that neon colors would be too much. Throw down a $10 off any purchase over $20 and I get these for a little over thirty five bucks since you have to pay tax on the pre-ten spot off price so in reality it's like $9 off but I digress... Keep in mind that although these are similar in appearance to Vibram FiveFingers they are not and FILA makes sure to stress that they are indeed not a competitive product of the FiveFingers. Skele-Toes are a thicker sole designed for more every day wear. Vibrams on the other foot are not recommended for daily use on hard surfaces like pavement. The Vibrams are much more flexible but this is about the FILA's As a rule I prefer minimal footwear, barefoot is my absolute preference however since my darling wife is diabetic she gets all freaky about unprotected feet, so for my darling wife I wear as little footwear as I can get away with. Moccasins, flip flops and water-shoes are my usual shoe selection but I saw these new toe shoes and thought I'd give them a shot. Fit: They absolutely fit the bill in the fit department, even with the fourth 'EZ Slide' toe pocket on the end they fit snugly and don't slip around on the foot. The arch support is both non-existent and the perfect amount at the same time thanks to the strapping method. The only complaint I have is that they don't come in half sizes and where the 12 is a touch too snug (at first) the 13 was too long in the toes to be comfortable. A 12½ would be ideal but they do fit better as I use them. Comfort: They are as you might expect slipper comfy because they hug your entire foot and really don't move. They are designed to be worn without socks although thin toe socks are available, I don't see the need, my feet stay comfortable and dry in these whether I'm walking, sitting around the house or driving the car. Performance: FILA says these shoes are something you use after you take off the FiveFingers, something more durable in an everyday environment and so far they hold up. Wore them to a car show and stood around for a couple hours and really didn't mind too much, this is when I had them on for just a couple days, I'm sure as they break in it'll get even more comfortable. Been using these as my primary driving shoe and they are excellent, narrow enough and close fitting enough so my big ass feet don't bang together in a rather small foot well. Good pedal feel with the thin soles, being a barefoot driver most of the time, I appreciate the feedback from the pedals and these don't mask a bit of it. Now today I took a walk in the hills since I'm a bit more used to the shoes and I have to say I walked farther, faster and with less fatigue than in my OP walking/hiking shoes which are made for rough terrain with all the extra padding and support you think you need. Uphill is a snap, roll onto the toes for the steepest part and you just climb. Coming down is slow going because I really thought about where my foot was going each time I stepped down as there is no forgiving padding under the heel, however for the most part I'm walking much more flat footed or on the balls of my feet instead of heel striking. It just feels more natural. Style: Well, as you can see, they aint pretty folks. However when it comes to foot wear I strongly believe if they have to be a little ugly to work as well as they do, so be it. I wore Birkenstocks until I couldn't afford to any more because they work and work well. Price: Honestly, the deal breaker was the coupon my wife remembered she had sitting on the desk. Ten bucks is ten bucks as they say however after wearing them pretty much everywhere for the last two weeks, the $50 regular price is worth it, it's at the very limit of worth it but it's still on this side. Next I save up for the Vibrams and we start trail running, of course this is after I get back below 200 pounds...

i notice you have a sock tan wich is contradictory in light of the fact that you said you prefer to wear mocasins and sandles.
cool review nonetheless

Nah, theres a sole. It's thin enough to be kinda flexible and a bar like pad under the ball of my foot, very subtle. It's hours later and no soreness, no stiffness which isn't usually the case.
I like the comfort of very minimal shoes, flat soles, no built up heel. I have unusually narrow feet and seriously high arches and most shoes are uncomfortable so as close as I can get to barefoot is awesome. Even though my winter color is deceiving, I do spend my days in flip flops and now these since my toes poked up through my Speedo water shoes the other day. Like I said, I plan to buy the Vibrams if I can find 'em on sale and I'll review those as well.

Haha I'd try those out for sure, they look like they'd be good for cottage getaways.

They aren't really jean shorts unless you can see the pockets.

You'd be surprised how comfy the vibrams are, even with the thin soles. I've had a pair of the sprint version for about a year now and I've only been uncomfortable after walking around in them all day. Your feet also get stronger when you wear them, which then lets you use all those features they pack into expensive shoes just that much better.
Check out the Vibram Treks. They're made of kangaroo leather and are tough as nails. |

I've always wanted a pair of these kind of shoes but I'm pretty sure they don't make them in my size cause I've got wide ass feet.
