Isn't it strange to have a Jefferson Davis Highway in Washingon?
I never realized we had roads in the nations capital named for the first and only president of the confederate states of america.
Jefferson Davis Highway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia There was some protest for bradley manning today and the protesters "sat down on the jefferson davis highway".... which spurred me to realize that we have a highway named for him.... pretty fucking strange considering his biggest purpose in life was to destroy the union. i wonder how that got named for him. strange shit, yes? |

the state house of south carolina flew the confederate flag atop its dome up until 2000, when it was then moved "on ground", near a memorial to african-americans and their history in the civil war. there is also statues of strom thurmond and benjamin tillman located next to it aswell.
so, it's not that strange that there is a highway in dc named after jefferson davis.

I don't find it strange at all. But then we have confederate monuments here.
Jefferson Davis was also a West Point graduate, a veteran of the Mexican-American war, a US Senator, and the US Secretary of War at different times. He was also Zachary Taylor's son-in-law (briefly). He also argued against succession, but believed in state's rights. |

So then I thought, maybe he was a Senator that helped Washington gain it's Statehood, which took place in 1889.... but that was the year he died. The Daughters of the Confederacy had something to do with the routes naming. It was intended to run from the South over to San Diego, much like the Nations first coast to coast driving route, The Lincoln Highway, which is Route 30. Which I've lived on in 3 places in two states.... But anyways.... I really can't figure out from anything on the nets. THANKS for creating this thread J, and being bold enough to always speak your mind. Cheers SageTree

Damn Sage, don't make me look it up again...lol
I think I read that he resigned as a Senator to become the Confederate President. I think it was Mississippi. JFK, I also want to thank you for creating threads. Sometimes the things you say piss me off alot, but as long as you keep an open mind, it's all good. |
