We get taught it in school but then when we go to Quebec they look at us like we have snakes coming out of our nostrils...so I've heard. A woman that used to come in to my old job sent her daughter there who was fluent..and they treated her like a joke...so she told me.

i got weird looks for my alberta-french, because there is no reference for french people to know where i am from. i am not american, british or french.. but i don't speak quebecois.. but i speak french fluently and obviously have english as a first language, plus i am not african. in the mind of a french person i don't exist, since people from alberta don't speak french unless they are francophone.

I have been living in The Netherlands for almost 7 months now, I have a dutch girlfriend who helps me alot and am now at the point where I can have lengthy conversation in Dutch, which I think is pretty cool because I have always wanted to speak another language.

I can't speak for everyone but Canadians on the west coast have a very hard time learning french because we have no one to speak it with nor do we have much french media to watch. A huge part of learning a language is being able to use it.

Sure we learn it in school but most students don't have much interest and the teachers aren't too good either. However I do have a few friends who went to french immersion schools were half of their lessons are in french and those students are all fluent.

That being said I think when i do finally put some serious effort into learning french it should come fairly easy. Growing up with two languages on every product will inherently give you a pretty good vocabulary.
