well I was offended because I have made a serious effort at learning spanish.

i learned spanish in highschool, was pretty good at it by the end but have totally forgotten it since. i know a little bit of italian from living in italy for two months and living with italians who spoke no english, by the end i was having basic conversations, its amazing how fast you learn when you are totally immersed in it, but that too i have been forgetting from not using. lately i am making a strong effort to learn chinese using rosetta stone and library books and i plan to stick with it, its a whole different ballgame though than the romance languages.

french (fluent)
norwegian (fluent)
english (fluent)
serbian (not so fluent, but understanding/reading is getting better)

by knowing only those 3 languages fluently, i can understand a great deal from most european languages. ie reading spanish (medium), italian (medium), romanian (fluently.. much to my surprise), danish (fluently), swedish (fluently), dutch (pretty close to fluently), german (medium), bulgarian/slavic languages (almost the same as serbian).

and also because scientists use so many variables and english only has 26 letters, i can read in greek (that is to say, pronounce written words with good success) without understanding anything (except for words that i know already).

i think if it didn't go well for me being a scientist, i would have probably studied linguistics instead.

edit: and italian kinda. it is neat how knowing one latin language helps youto get the others. and also knowing german helped with the scandahoovian languages, but what is going on with swedish? it is so not the same

on a serious tip, I know enough french and spanish to get me by. Getting pretty good at latin roots, etc. so that's become helpful. That's about it though :/
