You mean, rain that's slightly more radioactive than normal.

if you even bothered to read to the end of the article you posted, you would have read that it was 100,000 times lower than radiation from a rock, bricks or the sun. i know for a fact (since you said it yourself) that you only learned about millisieverts last week, but if this scares you i think you have a reading comprehension problem.

you guys should honestly be more concerned about stuff like this if not these exact things that are happening... and the consequences such events portend.

just because you dont like me, thats cool and all, but dont dismiss this stuff because if you do then u will be guilty of being part of the stupid (or ulterior motive and vested interested) group that prolongs many stupid status quos in society, (like failure to move to renewables when its clearly the best long term plan, or marijuana prohibition) and that you three ostensibly often speak out AGAINSt.

look at these comments from the article, kinda captured the exact same way i feel and you should feel.

A nuclear accident ANYWHERE is a nuclear accident EVERYWHERE. The radiation may not be dangerous in MA right now, but what's next? Nuclear power is, quite simply, not an acceptable risk.

Telling people there's only a little radioactive fallout in their drinking water is like telling someone they only inhaled a little bit of asbestos. Or their kid only ate a little bit of lead paint chips. Or there was only a little bit of HIV in that blood transfusion you got. Next thing they'll be telling you not to worry about that brain tumor you got from the drinking water because it's just a little on

The drinking water supply is unaffected huh? He's a liar. There's radioactive fallout in it. It quite obviously has been affected. And he's keeping secrets too. Won't reveal the town where the sample was taken. What were the specific readings? We're supposed to just take this guy's word for it that there's no problem? And that Ballinger clown from MIT is clueless. He says the situation in Japan is contained? Has he even seen the news lately? It's giving off more radiation now than ever. Totally out of control. And I love how they say the half life is 8 days so it will shortly dissolve to nothing. That assumes a one-shot dump of fallout. That isn't the case. It's going to be constantly replenished until the situation in Japan is cleaned up. Don't trust these people. They think their job is to downplay the situation. They aren't straight shooters.

you do realize that breathing fumes from combustion engines and coal burning electrical generators cause health problems as well... so whats the better alternative?

Auerbach said in addition to being harmless levels of radiation, the half-life of the material is about eight days, meaning it will shortly dissolve to an undetectable level. Meanwhile, state health officials said they are sampling water supplies across the state for elevated readings. Thus far, the testing has shown no detectable levels.
I have to ask.... Why'd you think that posting that would get 'us' to listen?

i'm glad you are concerned about us enough that you think we should be worried about something that is 100,000 times less harmless than a rock in my yard, but i don't really follow the logic.

As terrible as Japan's current crisis is, and fully admitting I am not a scientist by any means, I think it would be preemptive to throw the baby out with the bathwater in regards to nuclear power. Accidents are bound to happen with virtually every single method of collecting, using and storing energy but that does not inherently mean said methods don't work and should be abandoned.

If anything, we should simply move or work to build all new reactors closer to the Heartland and flyover states. I can pretty much guarantee a reactor's safety if it's nestled in the mountains of Western Montana, where there are no tsunamis, or tornadoes or hurricanes, as well as being a state that has not had an earthquake over 7.3 on the Richter in recorded American history.

So I guess my position would be to minimize harm by moving reactors to states like Montana, where a few reactors won't be noticeable at all in a state with less than a million people, then to completely discard an energy source proven time and again to be viable if harnessed responsibly.

Didn't we have a whole shitload of radiation even closer to Calif. back in the 50's? Does anyone know how many above ground bomb tests they did in the Nevada and New Mexico deserts?

Seeing as I was born in the 60's in california, with no extra arms or heads or anything, I'm going to just not worry about this one.

I feel that wind power (since pa doesn't get much sun) along with solar are good options for reducing the need for fossil fuel, for power generation of that type.

I also feel that fuel cell technology has a place in the distant future.
Nuclear energy (nuclear powered teapots) will also be around probably for a long time.

The simple fact that many power companies are currently funding all of the above, and already profiting from those projects, tells me this is so.

Tho I'm a bit disappointed in Westinghouse's fuel cell research (it's been in a drawer for 30 years) but maybe there's still hope. (I built a device that monitors the output of it's individual cells, and the total of the cluster ) HydroGen, Pittsburgh.

My expertise is in the electronic monitoring devices themselves. Yes even solar. The company I work(ed) for has already designed and built (2) 8 channel solar panel monitors to compare efficiencies of individual panels and overall arrays...for a company in Canada. ( and possibly for a company in California sometime soon)
