this is the road we are headed down here too. The demagogues on tv say things like "oh i hope the republicans will try to fix social security because its so popular that they will be voted out".... etc..

the fact is, people will always vote to get more and spend less.... so if we only go by what people vote for, we will vote to send our selves over a freaking cliff.

being a leader is about forcing people to do whats best for them long term even at the expense of the short term. I personally applaud the gop for trying to tackle this problem- the social security medicare medicaid costs we have comming on down the line will destroy our country if we dont fix them.... and as iceland shows, we cant wait until it becomes "popular" because iceland already went bankrupt and the people there still vote to not pay their debts.

Iceland needs to go back to consignment (which worked fine for a hundred years)
Take their banks back, and regulate them...heavily.
