maybe this is why dubai will never be a super tourist destination...

gulfnews : Student convicted of smuggling drugs in UAE

man gets 10 years in jail for 1.01 gram of heroin.

....i heard about another guy who had .00001 gram of marijuana stem in the crack of his boot tread and they drug tested him and when he tested positive he got 3 years in jail just for having something stuck on his shoe that might have just been from the street...

and you always hear about british people getting fucked for kissing and being on beaches and drinking and shit.... lol.... its crazy that they wanted it to be a western tourist destination there when u think about it, i think some of the shit dubai has done is somewhat cool, but its like they want it and they dont want it at the same time.

what doest thou thinkist?

I think that with all the threads you post, and all the opnions you are willing to be vocal about; you could be a real force in reviving other parts of the board.

But whatever, I don't care.

Dubais leaders are catering to both sides the west and their demands, and the demands of the population.

The tourists won't flock to dubai because the city doesnt know where to throw their shit, growth has overextended the sewer treatment facilities...so they dump mass amounts of human waste behind dunes, within close proximity to their main draw, the beaches....

Place is a literal shithole...

My niece and my nephew are studying in Dubai, I don't know if its a nice tourist destination for someone who's looking forward to smoking pot every day or enjoying a sun bath on a nudist beach, but it's definitely a vibrant and multicultural metropolis.
Drugs are expensive but widely available especially on campuses. Also night life is almost comparable with western Europe, there's plenty of E's and shabu if you know the right peeps, getting caught will get you in a lot more trouble then in the US, but that's about the only difference.

I am friends with a man from Saudi Arabia.
Fahad is a really good dude and I enjoy being his friend, but when the subject of herb and drugs came up the first time I was shocked.
He said anyone who uses drugs should be killed.... and was drop dead serious.
I said 'You mean people who sell them?'
He said 'No, ANYONE who uses them.'
So regionally speaking, I am not that surprised they are tough on 'crime' there.
But advertising to the West and holding those values is some what in-congruent.

If you really get down to it though.... this is sorta the same conversation topic that was brought up in the "France removes the veil" thread in P&C, that pointed out 'people should fall in line, with where they want to live' or in this case visit.

Traditionally, Muslims aren't supposed to drink even, so if nothing else, like the drinking, I can see how they make an example of those caught publicly using or 'trafficing'.

Personally, while I see merit in respecting the rules of a society, I don't agree with the policies/punishments in the OP.

Crazy man. I have gotten to know like 3 or 4 muslim dudes on campus, 2 were Turks and not very observant and totally smoked pot, one was a dude from Yemen who was pretty religious and smoked occasionally and didn't have a problem with it. The last guy was from Kuwait, was super religious and never smoked and was super naive about the States but hilarious b/c is a girl walked by in skimpy clothes he would get all red lol

Newt Gingrich proposed the death penalty for anyone importing more than 56 grams of marijuana.

Gingrich is the architect of H.R. 41, a bill that would require the death penalty for anyone smuggling one hundred dosage units of an illicit substance across the border. That's about two ounces of marijuana and would practically cut the population of Mexico in half. Newt Gingrich has admitted to smoking marijuana, quite possibly more than two ounces and we sincerely hope should his bill pass the House, that retroactivity clauses be put in place: we want to see Newt with a flour sack over his head, too, along with everyone else.

Newt Gingrich, The Master of Ethics

yes indeed, death is definitely a deterrent !

I think I'll go ahead and never go there, or any other backwards ass country where swearing or "behavior offensive to Islam" (anything?) lands you in jail. It's fine if they want to live with a judicial system that's 1000 years in the past, they're the ones that live there and not myself, but they can't expect many people from to want to go there in the face of it.

(granted the second one's from a tabloid, but these are just a couple things I've happened upon, I'm not liking the trend of the things I read about Dubai)

How can age be a bad thing when the democratic system and the judicial system has ties with the romans, and even farther back?

I say this with respect and curiosity when I ask you: why would you want to be friends with someone who has such a widespread intolerance like that, if he's drop dead serious about that, presumably he wants all the people who have a cup of coffee in the morning dead, along with anyone who has a beer or a smoke occasionally? Dead? Seriously?

You're talking about the same countries that make canned whiskey.

I see where you are coming from.... he of course meant illegal drugs, although he has some serious disdain for alcohol as well. Like most people in the world, once you get past that, you have a hard time talking about ALL the drugs... you know what I mean.... of course you do

In many ways this man wasn't more intolerant than the average person I come across on most other things, no matter where they are from.

I would say we befriended each other, as we often ran into each other and would have coffee, ironically enough, but never 'hung out' or anything.
It was friend of a friend, and in the city I was happy to see someone I recognized.

I'd also never meant anyone from Saudi Arabia so I wanted to talk about stuff and get to know a person instead of a media headline.

No point in being rude and not taking a chance to learn someone's perspective on life....

But yea.... I wouldn't play semantics... I'd call him a friend... as I was trying to be one as well.

i dont know about this instance, but alot of people who 'smuggle' drugs into jail have drugs on them when they're arrested, dont tell the cops because they dont want the posession charge, and then when its found after theyre taken to jail the penalties are MUCH worse.
