People at the top of the power chain do stuff much worse than internet piracy and its cool for them, so I definitely don't feel bad about taking advantage of whatever I can.

My moral code lines up almost suspiciously with things that save me money and make my life more convenient.

I never download anything illegal. I've never pirated once. Well maybe for a couple songs when I had napster, but lars really made me feel bad for it and I don't do it anymore.

What's the deal with the whole lost sales discussion?
I mean, there is no way I would ever buy all the 22 series I have laying, or the many many games and apps, or movies. It feels very philosophical. HEre in dk every single ISP has blocked The Pirate Bay. Only at an DSN level though, so just need to change that or go through a proxy.

how can they lose out on sales that were never there....they only recently(with the advent of dvd) were able to market things like tv shows on dvd, and a cheep to the consumer ability to own a home video version of the box office films(before vhs's were priced outrageously in the first few months so that rental places could make their dime)...as for the music industry, musicians have never made money off of albums, they make their money through other means of merchandise and touring, albums are just a way to recoup the loans that are doled out to make the things in the first place...
It aint our fault the pirates beat big business to the punch on the digital front but whats done is done...I'm not crying for all the fat that was cut out during the middle/end of the last decade, its not like those assholes did anything else but collect money to market art that isn't theirs anyways...

^ True, whatever I illegally download I wouldn't go and buy it in the shops ever, even if it wasn't freely available on the net, so no I don't feel guilty at all.
I didn't buy records or cd's before the internet either, I did copy cassette tapes tho. |

I'm glad for the record industry that for the most part corporate bands have evolved to be bands that have incorporated rather than just a bunch of companies swooping up bands and creating "super rosters" of bands that all create the same McMusic...Even in the pop world of the Hova's they own their labels and have creative control over what they do(catering to sponsors aside)....It is/has helped turn a commodity based business back into a creativity driven business in a small way...

There is so much music I would never own/hear of if it wasn't for piracy.
So many shows and people I would have never met if I had never discovered this and this band. Have you ever read Cult of the Amateur Grieves? Thank you internet.

yeah and that guy is a clown...People will always need to feed their need to create, we aren't creatures that only consume experience, we must create experiences to make ourselves feel whole...His view is too 2-d for me, it doesn't consider the full picture, that we still have irl to generate the content, sure the internet is the delivery method but our lives make up the content...He just makes himself out to sound like the food critic that has never cooked, or the music critic who has never played an instrument, etc....

its not even a question a morality, its a matter of each thing i am downloading having been created, archived and shared by someone. the fact that it exists is the only excuse that anyone needs to download it. i don't have thousands of dollars for software, cds and movies, so there was never really going to be any revenue coming from me anyway. i did spend hundreds of dollars on a computer and an (unlimited) internet connection so that i could gain access to this amazing thing called the internet, which is so full of freely available information you'd almost think it was designed for the purpose of exchanging stored data. . .
to imply that it is immoral to use a computer for anything that it is capable of doing is ignorant and doesn't really make any sense.
