So I managed to get a job in the centre of Rome at a bed and breakfast working at the reception, it's kind of come out of the blue though i've always had travelling on my mind.

So this will be the first time i've travelled alone, i'm kind of nervous about the whole airport thing and being in a city i've never been to before but I think the excitement is helping dull the nerves, as some of you know i'm a keen photographer and there's thousands of great photos to be taken in Rome!

I've been to Italy before but that was further north, I had a great time there and took some cool photos ive shared on here before (ChronicSonic's deviantART Gallery) I'm planning on keeping a day to day blog maybe here on Yahooka since nobody really reads those blog sites.

I'd suggest doing a tumblr or something. Tumblr is a lot more visually appealing, and I think it might be a solid idea to keep hooka and your "blog" separate. If you wanted to share it with a coworker, or family, etc. you could link to it ... and you could still link it to people here if you wanted to. I think it just leaves your options open.
protip: Don't count on a romantic, historically rich city to be the cause of good photos. You have to be that, regardless of what city you're in. Having said that, I remember a man I travelled with saying that one of the greatest struggles for him was capturing moments that aren't so much about what the tourist in you is thinking. It'll be good once you get settled in to see how your photos progress from the you that arrived as an outsider, to the perspective of someone who truly lives there. /visionnerd

i was alone in sweden, norway, czech republic, random bits of eastern europe, denmark.. and some other places in europe. its weird not knowing anyone, especially if you don't speak the language. you will learn to cherish every random encounter you have with an english speaker. its also really easy to get ripped off, so don't be afraid to stand up yourself (perhaps since you are american i should rather warn you to be smart about this, since everything thinks you are asshole anyway).

i usually travel with a laptop so its really easy to get free wireless and plan where to sleep and how to get around. advice from locals is invaluable and should be treated like gold. if you can meet someone who is willing to you show you around, it will definitely be more interesting than anything you could have planned on your own.
