The point of a roundabout is no left turning assholes fucking up traffic, you want to go left, make three rights instead.

There is an offset intersection near my house where one road comes into the intersection and ends but picks up again about twenty yards to the west on the other side of the street, guaranteed to be a Mexican standoff there at least once a day. two cars wanting to turn left onto the side streets stop and signal but the traffic backs up behind them so they can't turn left since opposing traffic has blocked the way. I imagine they will come upon the scene in a thousand years and find a dozen cars with skeletons behind the wheel who died waiting behind a couple of assholes who wanted to turn left.


I'm all for roundabouts, cloverleafs, grade crossings. Anything that'll keep the traffic flowing. Including freeway speed limits of 35mph during peak rush hours, this alone would virtually eliminate gridlock.

Gridlock is caused by the constant acceleration and deceleration of vehicles traveling in packs trying to reach the elusive 55mph and beyond where they think all good drivers need to be, eventually the space between the packs decreases and then you have gridlock, everyone traveling at three miles an hour and running up on the next guys bumper only to stop until that asshole moves. By lowering the speed limit, you eliminate the pulsing of traffic packs, you would essentially never reach the pack in front of you as they would not be sitting behind the pack in front of them and traffic flows along at a lower speed where it is much easier to merge and change lanes and enter and exit the freeway.

You also reduce catastrophic collisions, the kind that tie up traffic for hours on end because some asshole thinks it's fine to do the speed limit in his car even though the rest of the traffic is doing 8mph and he's doing the bob and weave until he hits a short bus full of his peers and spreads himself along the emergency lane of the other side of the freeway. Instead we have bumps and dings and cars that can be driven safely off the road where civil folk can discuss shit civilly. Although you would indeed curtail even those types of incidents since everyone would be much less stressed out, getting to their appointments on time and relaxed thus causing a ripple effect in the whole planet and then no more war and free healthcare and no more poverty and world peace all because someone thought 'Hey, maybe if we just slow down a bit...'

actually if one was so inclined (like a suicide bomber) they could get past one of these nets by simply attaching a long bar to the front of the car so it gets under the net and then it'll just slide over the car since its stretchy.
