This thread kinda reminds me of this book "The Key" by Whitley Strieber. In it the Master of the Key tells us that a shift in our conscious energy is absolutely required for our survival as a species much as CT was saying. It's a strange book, a lot of very interesting ideas, it's worth a read!

The problem with people who break and enter a home is that intentions are not known. This perpetrator may only intend on stealing a few hundred dollars worth of stuff or they may intend to rape and or kill you. Situations such as with this lady happen to be a little more defined but in many situations an intended hesitation can be disastrous.

Trying to determine whether or not guns save lives is really tricky. I mean, on a day to day basis, WAYYY more people are killed with guns who otherwise would not have killed anyone. Has anyone heard of war? There's no way the civilian casualties due to guns, which occur and have occurred throughout the years outweigh the number of self-defense shootings worldwide in that same amount of time. Add on homicides and accidental deaths... and yeah, there's no way guns 'save' more lives when you look at it like that.
However, when you consider large population and post-generational implications of these gun deaths, it gets a lot harder to say. For example, you can reason that slaughtering the people of another country has 'saved' your own people by way of providing new resources. You could reason that since the human population is exploding, guns, providing us with a way to kill large numbers of us off is a good thing in the long run, saving more time for we as a species to figure things out.
Jeez. There seem to be no simple issues.

Fact is as I've said before, guns exist, so deal with it.

Sure.

I think it's important to explore the implications of the tools we use though, don't you?

call it what you want to call it, but yes, it's nature. and nature is why/how this fool died.

all about survival.

So, I didn't read those 'stats'.... because I don't really feel you've read what I have typed here or else you wouldn't be trying to prove anything to me.

I say that WHY people want to kill each other is the major factor/fault in these deaths/violence, PERIOD... whatever the weapon.

As a species I don't believe we need to fall back on this anymore, or at least in the way it seems to be implied.

It IS all about survival, that is the definition of 'life' basically, and things do need to die for us to live... but I don't think the implications of the above gets to be included into MY opinion about guns and why they aren't the instrument of the Dark Lord or whatever.

I feel you got to be honest about the accidental death and injury.

Again here ... I generally believe that these could largely be avoided if people practiced better gun safety....

KNOWLEDGE is the power here that makes a tool worth while... not the simple ownership. I.E. people in cars without proper training or maintain the proper respect for their 'tool'.

There are more guns per capita in Canada.... use your good friend Google and look at murders w/ guns, armed robbery and accidental shooting deaths here....

Since you're the expert on guns stats, , how do you explain this way of survival where more people have guns and are using them less in protection/crime?

Perhaps you'll say it's because more people have them... that'd be a cliche defense , but I really don't think that is the case at all.

People here don't seemed to be raised with the mentality that other people are trying to get 'your' lion's share like I perceived from the years and upbringing in the States.

So understand, that while if I had one wish, it would be for all guns to disappear (so people could stop using the 'everyones doing it' or 'they are already here' argument), but since that's not going to happen I DO accept they are here to stay.

And as a man who grew up using guns to harvest nearly all the meat we ate, I understand the importance of the tool for gathering food. I didn't grow up in a place where carrying a gun was a game plan or necessity, and will not pretend to understand what that is like. I have never thought of a gun as protection, in my own life's experiences.

So know, I'm not blanketing my conversations on either side of the fence here... the 'fence' doesn't exist to me.... this is just my opinion.

Don't put me on a side, it's all Earth and we're all humans.

Hearing stories about places where friends of friends get shot daily is so surreal to me. I've never spent more than a week in a big city and here in Missoula one murder is considered shocking and is always front page news. The worst thing that ever happened here was a serial killer struck about ten years back and killed three ladies.

It's just crazy to hear you guys talk about how your hometowns are riddled with violence and crime. Hope that element never moves north

That's not a cliche defense its the truth.. You wouldn't rob somebody you know is packing..duh the more people with guns the more criminals will second guess their actions.. Pretty common sense in my book.

Maybe the fact that gun violence is down up there is bc of the fact there are guns

Guns make it way to easy to kill people... The intent might be there but how many people have be the victim of an accidental stapping?

People with guns rob other people with guns. That is a fact.

lol, when i was like 13 i accidentally stabbed my friend in the hand, went almost all the way through. it was a bit of stupidity on both our parts. even now i play with knives. my gun though, i've never shot anyone with it, never pointed it at anyone, always very careful. anecdotal, but just thought i'd share.
