"Maybe they wont be hippies long, thats my hope", said Mrs. Nixon, about meeting some "very very happy" hippies in San Fransisco who she talked to about the moon landing. (to reword and paraphrase a bit)
It's funny that 'they' is from the actual quote... I'm sure it's a typo. What does hippie mean to you today JFK, as you seem to be implying your opinion or the answer? Funny was reading down through the back pages of Higher Thoughts and saw this post: http://www.yahooka.com/forum/higher-...-lose-60s.html, and then a little later this post here comes up. Not picking on your dude, just had to give it a bump.

I think "hippie" is one of those words that changes definitions with whoever is saying it.

good question roach, i actually was at woodstock 99 and thought it was pretty awesome.
and the original woodstock would probably be considered at the very least a shitty environment compared to todays festivals...its all about being the first , the original. edit- and sage, to me hippy today is like a person who believes in hippy style shit- they dont all believe the same things, but i think of them as being like interested in how to live your own life, like libertarians, whereas pat nixon was talking about them like they were revolutionaries and were just only angry at society....maybe part of it is that society has changed a lot, like if the parts that pissed them off then were still true they maybe would still be pissed, i dunno... but pat nixon had this idea of hippys like the way u hear about them talking about them in documentaries from the 60s- like black panthers or malcolm x followers....and crobsy stills songs like chicago and the riots and shit its not surprising they thought that.... seems like hippies have made peace with society and society has made peace with hippies... at least to a large extent. (actually what happened was hippy culture was co-oped by madison avenue and sold back to the hippies and the rest of america for 19.95, after being scrubbed of all seditious political content...but thats another thread )
