It is primeval. It's an instinct acquired way back before modern medicine to treat wounds via tongue lashes to the affected area to cleanse it. The taste, while somewhat off-putting, is, in your mind, a kind of reward, instinctively sought-out, sort of like scratching yourself - yeah I'm just making this shit up but it sounds legit.

on a side note, back in high school, a friend of mine got whooped in a fight, and had his upper lip split up to his nose, pretty gruesome. anyways, he ended up swallowing so much blood that it made him sick which made him vomit up the blood he swallowed.
