The Sun

Sun uncorks a massive solar blast - Science Fair: Science and Space News - USATODAY.com
Quote:
NASA reports the sun has fired off a spectacular "coronal mass ejection", following a solar flare erupting from a sunspot region.

CAPTIONNASA/SDO

"The large cloud of particles mushroomed up and fell back down looking as if it covered an area of almost half the solar surface," says a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center team statement.

The space agency's Solar Discovery Observer recorded the peak of the blast, which also loosed a minor radiation storm, on Monday. The blast may disrupt some radio signals on Earth but poses no danger overall.

Comments astronomer Phil Plait, on his Bad Astronomer blog, "the solar cycle is heating up and we can expect to see more incredible events from our friendly neighborhood star in the coming years."

this shit happens all the time.

While it was massive compared to anything we could conceive, it's not that big of a flare for the sun.

nothing is gonna happen except maybe some good Auroras up north.

Some dude was telling me the magnetic fields that protect the earth from a lot of radioactive particles is somehow gonna fuck up in the coming years and we're all gonna have our cells particle fucked by cosmic radiation.

wow. i didn't come here expecting fb to set things straight before me. i don't understand how this makes major news networks bimonthly, when interesting things are happening all the time in solar physics. for anyone who is actually interested in solar physics there are some great websites to check out (see below). i usually keep an eye on this stuff because i have always lived far enough north to enjoy the northern lights, which i will be looking for tomorrow night (25% chance).

so is this why there was all this weird lightning last night?

it's kind of hard to explain... it wasnt hitting the ground, it was kind of just streaking across the sky and it seemed to be longer in duration as well

something like that.

Keeps people from thinking, "What the fuck does Nasa do anyhow"

When the "big one" hits, we won't need the news to tell us. They probably won't be able to anyway. But people will figure it out when their satellite stops working and an aurora is seen in Cuba.

There will only be like a 1000 mile wide band by the equator that won't see it.

what i mean is that its puzzling how they skip reporting on interesting scientific discoveries about the sun to report bimonthly on a "MASSIVE SOLAR FLARE!!@!! ZOMG!" when such events are common. they gloss over the fact that sun operates in cycles and instead snipe at random flares as if they weren't expected.

if you take enough random numbers, eventually you will get number 13
