Hillbilly Wisdom

I was watching this show with show with my cousin about Swamp people, and how these people make a living off the land in Louisianna.

People view hillfolk and rednecks as dumb, uneducated, and trashy. While they may not be formally educated, hillfolk have learned several important survival skills passed down from generation to generation. This type of education is of greater value than traditional mainstream education because when society collapses, these people don't have to worry, because they know how to survive. They also have a strong sense of family, community, and morals (most of them).

They're generally happier too.

It's city slickers like us who are doomed!

Mainstream society does not give the hill billy, rather, the Hill William enough respect.

i love that show, and i agree

the same could be said for most people living outside of western society's overbearing reach.

plus i can't really imagine a more satisfying catch to eat than an alligator.

unless you like took down an angry bear with a knife

I watch these shows and I fantasize about living a similar lifestyle but the fantasy usually includes a small garden enough to sustain a daily wake and bake.

When the shit his the fan I'm NOT running to the city for help... that's for sure.

My Mom told me about this and she really enjoyed the cultural aspect of the show as well.
Granted... I think she misses the irony of thinking if 'different' since my family has been living in south central Penn since the last 1700s..... everyone is my cousin practically... you do the math

Having lived in an extremely densely populated materialistic state for my 20 years of life i can say this...

People living in the suburbs would be utterly lost if society/civilization got fucked up.

At least the poor people in the city can handle a rough life already. People here in the suburbs would lose their shit if even one of their many amenities were taken away.

I believe there is great hope for the middle class youth, such as myself. I think that any good we can do will come through the internet. We shall see eh
Right now though we are just a bunch of lazy fat people struggling to get a little money so we can keep buying shit...

IDK Fender.... I think while the burbs would no doubt have it's challenges, the city could get down right frightening.

Going north ftw....

Seeing how First Nations and Dene folk have lived are what has convinced me about the North.

Check out the Non-Partisan Gov't of the Northwest Territory, consensus gov't is a straight up carry over from their way of life. Very cool.

Plus anyone that can live in THAT kind of winter can probably hack just about anything.

I can kill and prepare my own food, make suitable shelter, start a fire without modern technology and on top of all that I can do math and science.

I've never lived in a rural area.

what now?

No pissing contest, just pointing out that not everyone in a city is fucked when civilization falls apart.

I live far enough north that there is dense boreal forest like 2 hours away from me. I'd just go there. But before that, I'll need food, I'm not above killing and eating house pets if I have to.

That is true. I know so many people that wouldn't even make it to the woods. And others that would make it there but would be royally fucked when the batteries on their GPS and electronic book thing (with which they would assuredly download some survival books before the internet shuts off) die.

I'm only half joking about city folks... I believe there is a pretty decent majority of these folks everywhere. Even in the country. Just to be clear on what type of paint I'm white washing with

But here is a Prime suspect....

A lady I went to church with who didn't understand why her student said 'turkey hunting' was his families pre-Thanksgiving tradition.

Seriously... wtf.... ????? I mean it's not common these days, I'll give her that, but come on, use a little intuition.

She's a TEACHER!!!!! FFS!!!!!

The new question of today's children isn't about sex anymore:

"Mommy, Where does hamburger come from?"

I keed I keed.... but seriously... this is one of those things I just don't get... how do people NOT know this?

You shouldn't have had to clean and gut something just to understand how the stork gets us 'da meat.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person I know that can navigate with a compass and the sky. They should start teaching this shit in school. They could take out something useless like art and replace it with survival. Making fire and knowing what plants will kill you if you try to eat them is more important than line perspective and reading about Claude Monet.

I realize that art is important to us as a species, but not in school. People that want to do art will do it and people that want to look at it will find some one way or another.

Ideally what you are talking about could be covered in physical/out door ed. or in a setting like when we had to learn CPR in health class that lasted a quarter of the year.

There is drivers ed. health ed. What about survival ed.?

Or they could combine them into Drive-Thrive-Survive Ed.

Something they should take out of schools instead of art.
Insinuating that materialism and GDP = success.
