Too smart for your own good?
Intelligence (being "smart) seems like an important quality to have. But what is "smart" anyways?
Is it common sense? Is it skill-based knowledge? Is it academic knowledge? Is intelligence a measure of over-all success in society? I've heard of the expression - "too smart for your own good" and I've applied to my life, and the lives of people that I know. I'm guessing this expression comes from the fact that there are a fair amount of so-called "smart people" with high IQs who who bore easily, and lack impulse control. For example, the PhD who drinks and gets behind the wheel, or the high powered executive that develops a coke problem, and loses his house/family/job/etc. Smart people...who do stupid things. Intelligence also does not necessarily equal monetary success or grant someone the ability to live comfortably. I know a few really intelligent, well-spoken people who are collecting welfare, or are working very low-paying jobs. I also know some people of average or below-average intelligence who are in "average jobs" making "average pay" and living comfortably. I'm very smart, but I have a lot of mental disorders, and a bit of an entactogen problem. I bore easily and have difficulty holding down a job. ...fuck I'm kinda just rambling here...but you guys know what I mean. Let's discuss this further... |

I am. People don't like that I acknowledge it (they think its arrogant) but my IQ has made my life suck since elementary school.
For me, 1992 to the present has been analogous to the episode of the Simpsons where Homer has the crayon removed from his brain but then Moe puts it back for him (much to the dismay of Lisa) How many kids in grade 3 know that the plural of coccyx is coccyges? Or even what a coccyx is? |

personally I think the term intelligence is pretty useless if you are trying to validate yourelf in some way, more on that later.
First, let's be honest: We all wanna know what intelligence it, so we can apply it to ourselves and quantify that shit. If I'm completely wrong on this, I'll still be right about what I'm about to adress next: I think you can reasonably say that there exists 2 basics emotions about oneself. One is self worth. It revolves around *who you are*, by that i mean how you feel about yourself, as the person you are. If you feel really good about yourself, and you are generally emotionally stable, you've probably got good self worth. The other is self confidence. I think this is a pretty misused term. It is often used inter-changeable with self worth. What self confidence entails is *what you're good at*, meaning your skills, like being able to read and understand text easily (guilty) or being able to adapt well and quickly to almost any work situation (again, guilty). It's what you're good at, and what you're not. The better you are at stuff, the bigger the self confidence. Here's the thing though, having loads of self confidence does not do all that much towards your basic self worth. Sure it helps, but when it all comes down to it, what does it matter that I can do this and that, when basicly I feel shit about myself. I don't know what you had in mind with this thread, and I apologise if I'm completely off mark here. Edit: Having thought about it, I think that if you take what I've written above in account, intelligence falls under self confidence. I think it's a skill/acedemics based ability. Now what about a person who is a smart guy?

That depends on what kind of confidence. I have confidence bordering on narcissism when it comes to knowing the answer to a question. Put me in a social situation and I don't know what to do. |

I think you should use "intellect" instead of "intelligence".
Intelligence is basic cognitive functions (self awareness, pattern recognition, deductive reasoning, metacognition etc). Even kids with extra chromosomes can do that on some rudimentary level. |

I hope there is. Or at least people that get that I'm not trying to sound like a know it all or be a dick. I just know a lot of things and don't like to see misinformed people and that I also prefer logical responses to emotional ones.

I plan on being a physician (well, at least have a medical degree, I don't really want to work with patients, more research). I should know. I'd be concerned if I didn't.

you are hilarious to me. you have no idea how 100% typical you are of a mediocre student. if you finish your bachelor and still have that attitude when applying to med, you won't get in.

If there's a difference between intellect, and intelligence, it's lost in translation on me. So I you are probably right. Having that in mind, you could say that intelligence is ones ability to learn, and retain knowledge.
