Which screwdriver should I get?
I'm wondering which of the above 3 brands I should get.
I've worked with them all, and they are all top quality power tools. I won't be getting any 18v models, probably 12-14 instead. Use will be home improvement, and various electrical jobs. No matter what I'll get one with a hammer built in, it'll be for small jobs, so it should be ok. I must say I'm partial to the makita. There's just something about their tools that really suits me. The Dewalt is great aswell. Damnit so is the hilti. The Dewalt: ![]() The Hilti: ![]() The Makita: ![]() Thoughts?

Makita is my choice.. I have a table saw, circular saw, impact driver, and 18v drill all Makita. Had them around 5yrs now. I did a lot of construction and they never failed me. Plus I think they possibly have the fastest recharge time also. Dewalt is good stuff too as you know.

Never tried their hammers. If I ever have to buy one I'll definitely check em out.
In all honesty I've never heard of Hilti before but I don't get out much. lol

Makita: long lasting, the turn feels nice, stops when you do. Also, I think, best design. There's just something about this that screams good product. I used this one extensively when I was an electrician. It's awesome for those lighter jobs. By that I mean lighter industrial jobs. Still a level above what I would normally use it for at home, in terms of strain on the gears. I have the most experience with this driver, and I've never had a bad experience with them. They do cost something. Dewalt: The carpenters tool. Especially if you get the hammer version and need to drill those long long long screw into a hard piece of wood. such an awesome experience. I've also worked with a lot of dewalt angle grinders and various power saws. Very good tools. They aren't the greatest in freezing temperatures though. Hilti: The work horse. A hilti hammer can withstand a 2 story drop and still just keep banging and banging. I've only had 2 experiences with their drivers, and they've always sort of fascinated. I'll never forget the summer of 2010 where I worked exclusively with hilti hammers. The newer ones with the new anti-vibration systems are insane. You barely feel the need to push on the hammer. I'm wondering if their drivers have the same qualities. Never have used them extensively. So there. ![]() Quote:

The only Hilti I know uses .22 blanks...I haven't used any of their power tools.
Makita and Dewalt are both very good brands. I am partial to the Dewalt drills/driver but Makita makes the best impact driver. If you're looking for a multi purpose drill I would get a Dewalt XRP series. It will cost you a little more than most drills but the XRP has the metal gear box and will last you a long time. I think getting a drill/driver/hammer is a bad idea for an "around the house" drill because you will limit yourself in choices and a hammer drill will probably weight a lot more than a regular drill/driver. Personally I think the best hammers need to be plugged in, as batteries tend to die when you need them the most and take a few hours to get a good charge. I own a Ryobi 18v drill/driver and while I only use it personally it has been very good to me and I wouldn't be afraid to consider. I have put it through a lot of abuse and I'm on my second set of batteries, received as a gift freshman year of high school (04).

I've got the Dewalt and it's great. The batteries are a bit shagged after 5 yrs of heavy use but no surprise I guess.
The design is basically a very old one, they've been more or less the same for decades. If I had the money I'd get the Hilti but the Dewalt is fine. Makita are good too but not quite as well balanced and designed- they tend to fall over and break the bit if you stand them on the battery. Edit- I can't believe no one said hilti but me.

But I kinda think I need tha hammer function. I'd hate to meet a concrete wall and not being able to make a hole for a rawplug.

Oh- what Roach said about lithium batteries.
Bosch and Panasonic make good drills too. Panasonic are probably the best for the money.
