'Nothing' jobs...
Anybody else have any jobs where you gotta work hard to make it look like your always working on something (i.e.,Outlook, Intranet).
I work at a company doing quality control for the medical industry and I literally only work for like 2 or three hours a day but get paid for 8. I always get my stuff done quickly then chill. It has its pros and cons and its awkward to step in as a temp and make the same or more than full timers do, and me basically watching people work ![]() Its not a bad gig tho... What are some monotonous jobs you've had to go through?

My job right now, well, I'm here right now talking on yahooka.
Except I'm allowed to do whatever when I'm not having to work. My job here today is being in charge of customer service at a bus depot, so i basically just have to hold the fort and make sure everything is running properly. As long as things are going fine, I can do whatever I want. It's nice having a job where you're the boss and someone isn't looking over your shoulder.

Believe it or not the most boring, monotonous job I ever had I did for fifteen years.
Repossessing cars. It's like police work, hours and hours of driving around looking at other peoples houses in the middle of the night until you find one and then BAM! And the five minute rush is over and you're back to moving someone elses shit around, looking at other peoples houses again.

my job is nice in the sense that no one is really looking over anyone's shoulder, all my "superiors" are my friends and we all understand that sometimes we get tired, need a break, or there's just plain no work that needs to get done. the general mentality is that we don't get paid enough to be super stressed out about work, scientists (lab personnel, lab techs, etc) in the academic system get paid jack shit despite the high degree of skill and devotion required, and you cant get paid overtime despite constantly having to work outside of 9-5. so when there is no work needs to be done i usually just goof off, take a long lunch and leave a bit early.
it actually felt wierd when i first took this job, because i was used to jobs where you had to constantly work and there was someone breathing down your neck to constantly work. it was awkward when my coworkers would tell me to "goof off" and i wouldn't know what to do with myself and i would pace around looking for something to clean

My last job was like that. I had to look busy all the time. I used to go to my boss and say I needed something to do, but that would lead to him putting me on a press for my shift (the equivalent of sticking your head in a 400° oven every 5 min for an entire day, and unloading a bunch of hot parts that smell like sulfur) and I was usually dressed for office work (being an engineer) so that pretty much sucked.
Toward the end, I was so tired of the bullshit that I would just sit around reading economics books on my computer when I had nothing to do, and break out some incomprehensible spread sheet whenever my boss came by. I hated it. It was way more stressful to try and look busy than to actually be busy. ![]() The Rev |

doing tech support for roadrunner internet.
the only people that ever called were the idiots that don't know what the address bar is or people just fucking with you. I did that for 8 months and spent most of that time here. |

I honestly work maybe 5 hours a week, the rest of the time I'm here. My boss comes in at 2-3pm and I can usually make it look like I'm doing something. I usually just stretch a project that i could do in an hour to two days. I do mostly graphic design/ marketing I could easily crunch out a flyer in an hour but he has no idea how long it takes. one day i was trying to show him illustrator and how complicated it can be, after that he never bother me. and as long as i listen to him drool on about his life and how shitty his kids are, and how much better a parent he is then is ex wife I'm ok. It sucks I get paid to much just to say fuck it. I swear if i never got this job my first year of college i would have my doctrine by now.

I've never had a job where there isn't something that needs to be done. Which isn't the job, it's the person.

might want to look for a new job if possible. a boss like that doesnt care for the employees at all.
i recently got a raise for upselling people. i didnt think my boss ever noticed how i work harder at selling than most of the other employees, but when he handed me my pay check he said i bumped your pay a bit ![]() it wasnt a large raise but it did make me feel better about actually trying at work.

In my last job, I and one of the other engineers were doing a study on a chlorination process. Well, we found out that the process we were currently using was running the acidity up too much in the solution, and as a result, the solution was releasing chlorine gas into the work area. We tested the air in there, and realized it was 3X what was legally allowed. So, we immediately went to the boss, and he just shut us down. "We're not changing our process!" and that was it. Our work could have saved the company a shitload of cash, and he just didn't want to hear it. I've said it a million times before: the only thing worse than a bad employee is a bad boss. ![]() The Rev |

I had a job that put me on the road most of the time I was at work.
I did dealer trades. Drove all over the state with lots of music and my friend 'Bob' was always with me. ![]() The worst trip I had to do was with a Chassis Cab. Think about a flatbed tow truck with no tow platform. The suspension was really stiff to support whatever weight was being added to the frame so the 150 mile ride home was torturous. I was flying back to Denver on I-70 because it was actually a smoother ride the faster I went. When I got back to the dealership, it felt like someone had repeatedly punched me in the lower back and kidneys. Awful. However, aside from that, most trips took up the whole day, and as long as I brought a receipt back, I could use Petty Cash to cover expenses during the day. So I usually brought back some smokes and cans of chew for some mechanic friends in the shop. Also, we had a revolving charge account with a gas station around the corner, so I never paid for gas the entire time I was there. And we did some SERIOUS fuckin' off at that place there were no trades that day. |
