Does everyone hate their home town?
I've always thought it was funny that everyone from here thinks of my town as a little podunk, drug stricken, drunken, fucked up town that no one can ever seem to leave. I haven't gone too far myself which I'm not exactly thrilled about but all things considered it's pretty nice here.
The thing is I'm pretty sure that's just how everyone, or at least most people, think. I don't know how to segway this into any kind of legit discussion so have at it how you will.

having lived other places really gave me an appreciation for the things that make edmonton unique. sure it has its problems (sub -40 winter temperatures, virtually no summer and too many suburbs, trucks and rednecks), but it really actually is pretty good in the context of the rest of the world.
i also lived in what was rated the city with the highest standard of living in the world (also most expensive), and that was nice but it was missing lots of things that i love/need. if all i had was my friends, i could really live anywhere.

I live in a pretty clean cut part of brooklyn, nevertheless I'm ready to leave NYC as this place makes you stress no matter how under control you thought you were. When i go "home" to where i lived as a little boy i love it. I miss nature and cool nights in the summer.
The grass is always greener on the other side eh? We tend to be unhappy with at least one thing in our lives, yet theres someone who would trade spots with you. Just gotta be happy with what life is, cause nothing is good and nothing is bad, things just are.

Not even close to the hick town where I grew up, Wellfleet, Cape Cod, Mass. It's great to visit, but man, winters are tough.
The best fried clams in both regions (better oysters in Wellfleet, of course) . I have a co-worker who lives in Ipswich.

I love Boston. Lived there for 7 years. I also generally like where I live now. Methuen seems just close enough to Boston as well as other nearby smaller cities, while just being less than a ten minute ride to tax free NH and whatever else NH offers (scratches head).

Great place to grow up, yet at the same time, I can't deny what Tim Burton comments on about suburbia:
“I grew up in suburbia and I still don’t understand certain aspects of it. There’s a certain kind of vagueness, a blankness.... Growing up in suburbia was like growing up in a place where there’s no sense of history, no sense of culture, no sense of passion for anything. You never felt people liked music. There was no showing of emotion. It was very strange. ‘Why is that there? What am I sitting on?’ You never felt that there was any attachment to things. So you were either forced to conform and cut out a large portion of your personality, or to develop a very strong interior life which made you feel separate.”

I moved out of my hometown in 2000 a month or so after graduation.
I moved back in with my Mom in 2002 to attend college, However after a year of that I moved out of her house and out of my hometown again. It was too easy to get sucked back into the same patterns that really didn't offer me much after what I feel I learned about myself in the time gone. It's nice now to go back and see the place, how it's changed, and oddly some-what how it hasn't. Lots of Friends are still easy to find and just where I remember them. They don't sound particularly happy with the place, yet they stay. I can see how easy it was to leave, but also understand how easy it is to stay. Over all I think my life outside of 'town' has helped me REALLY enjoy the time I spend there when I'm back visiting with family.
