Children lack the capacity to really understand sex, so I think that's for when they're older, but it's still better than most of the violence on prime time TV. As for seeing things that are associated with sex, like bare nipples and asses and such, who cares? There's nothing wrong with knowing what a full grown person looks like at that age. It's better than knowing what a gunshot wound looks like.

I ask because I think it's easier to integrate sex for the 'right' reason over violence for the 'right' reason.


When you aren't safe with your Love you create life.
When you aren't safe with violence Life can take a life.

Whats 'right' there could be debated I'm sure and broken down into 'whys' for sure....
But as a whole I'd rather explain to a kid what sex is and when it's best, than why it's ok to have to hurt/kill people sometimes.

if gratuity is the case, I would say violence. From what i remember as a small child, the gratuitous sex scenes in movies stuck with me more. Maybe because I was more fascinated with vaginas apposed to bombs?

violence. they can understand violence, they can't understand sex.
also they prefer to watch violence. Most kids until 10 years old don't want to watch kissing let alone any other form of sex / romance.

I try and limit it as much as I can with my kids but there is an incredible amount of violence in childrens movies these days it is impossible to avoid it.

I'm hard pressed to say that EITHER is really the best to SHOW a kid.
Perhaps limited exposure and talking would be more beneficial to children?

In the day to day world of which I have little control over, I prefer my daughter to see sexual acts.. um, not like fucking, but sexual things like kissing and stuff... i guess that'd be more like physical affection... guess that's the same as sex in a way.


as far as media i don't mind her seeing violence in the proper context. heroic, fantasy style fighting for the sheer thrill factor is ok. anything that actually passes into the realm of sadism is definitely not, or anything that uses the violence itself to try and shock you (like a war movie or something) is also not okay.

Sex in the media is almost always poorly portrayed. I keep that away from her.

We tried playing far cry 2 together once. She had a lot of fun pretending to bite them. She pretends to take a chomp out of the screen when a bad guy comes up then says, "NOW YOU SHOOT!" and then "BAM!"

Sex of course, sex brings pleasure and life. Violence simply brings pain, suffering, and death. It also brings power but I would rather my children learn about sex before violence, but in our society they both go hand in hand with media.

My concern with letting kids see violence isn't that they would go out an imitate it, but that they would learn to accept or even embrace it as a problem solving tool. There's a whole shitload of kids entertainment showing violence and force being used to solve problems of all kinds. In the adult world, populated by the former consumers of such programming, we don't think twice about using force and violence to solve every problem imaginable. What's the first thing people say when they think something is happening that is wrong? They cry out for laws against it (force). There are so many laws on the books that reflect not justice, or fairness, but simply one cultural group forcing their ideas of right and wrong on another, simply because of this knee-jerk use of force to solve problems. It's a big part of the reason the world is a fucked up place.

If we want to change this casual acceptance of force as a problem solving tool, we would be well advised to stop indoctrinating our children to the idea with heroes that espouse it in their entertainment.
