dubstep?
until i saw the south park episode that made fun of this i didnt realize it had become really popular with young kids all of a sudden.
so can someone tell me what exactly dubstep that is getting popular now is? is it like the same kind of stuff that was called dubstep in the mid 2000s when it was just a sub genre of electronic music or is it like something new or more pop-y that these kids like? how did something like dubstep go mainstream? its kinda like the stuff eoto plays right? i mean i like some electronic music and think other stuff sucks but its not really in an all one genre or another way. sometimes u feel like listening to trance other times it fucking is mad aggravating. so for the non hipster that i am what is this mainstream love of dubstep going on these days? |

"dubstep" is catch-all term at this point, as a genre it really means nothing besides usually dubstep songs are composed more of tones and sounds than melody and harmony. but theres also alot of good harmonic dubstep like burial.
alot of it is also 2 step- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-step_garage its basically the "techno" of the new millennium congrats on noticing another trend that happened like 5 years ago

I would probably enjoy Dubstep, if it hadn't lost the Amen Break that helped to make Drum and Bass so amazing sometime in the last 5 years...

most of the hippies i know love the dubstep.
its such a massive 'genre' these days. Its infecting alot of other 'bass music' / electronic music. but yes, transformer noise generic build up 'skrillex mt. eden' bro step is garbage. haha.

dubstep does draw on dub reggae, or i guess it "did" draw on it. seems like nowadays i can hear alot of hardcore/ metal influences. for example most of skrillex's shit is probably influenced by hardcore(not hardcore edm, hardcore metal or w/e its called)
i actually went to a dnb/ drumstep/ dubstep club on wednesday night. i was pleasantly surprised how many fine women were there dancing. @kaptnemo, you should try drumstep on for size, basically its drum n bass rhythms and basses but with half time structure so it feels slower. often times a drumstep song will drop into a standard drum n bass section and then change up into a halftime beat. drumstep: this is figure, the dj/ producer i saw at the dnb club (club is called Merge) lol it sounded alot better when it was shredding my eardrums some reggae vibes bassnectar sounds kinda hiphopish to me, he says he was influenced alot by westcoast hip hop and uk garage music which is often half time bass music heres breakage, he started out as dnb producer. this one has a very garage feel to me my sister asked me what kinda people go to the dubstep shows, i said hipsters, scenesters, and ravers. there were alot of frat douches there too, so whoever said students like dubstep is right. one of my pet peeves is people calling dubstep "dub". dub is an entirely different type of music.

Psh, dubsteb wishes.
Each to their own and whatever, I personally just can't get my head round a genre that sounds like it's all made by the same person. I'll gladly admit I don't "get" DS. How do you even dance to it in a club without flailing around like a spastic? There's barely a beat. It's like really really really badly made drum and bass, that someone just gave up on, yet Ketheads and people with frameless glasses and tight jeans seem lap it up.

I've only been to one dubstep show.
Didn't enjoy it a lot. Too many of those fucking trendy types. Them sorts of people constantly be glancing at you when you totally let loose. Annoying. Hard rock, metal shows...yeahhhh.. If I'm not covered in sweat and spit and a bit of blood by the end of the show, it wasn't a good show.
