He realizes that if republicans have their way, that there will be rioting in the streets.

20K troops will have difficulty keeping 70M gun owners in line.

20,000 troops in 20,000 apaches, then you could probably impose (or try to) martial law.

20,000 troops alone, imo, wouldn't be able to put even the west coast under a martial law, let alone the continental united states. i watched the video, and i pretty much agree with the last guy's opinion...

he's more worried about twenty years down the road, and what abuses might happen if the american public gets accustomed to having troops "defend" them.

have you ever seen a fully loaded apache in action? it wouldn't take 20,000 to take out the 70,000,000 gun owners considering they're mostly shotguns and 45s

@ ron - i was exaggerating.

if it only takes 20,000 troops to impose martial law on the united states of america, i will seriously eat my shoes.

ill probably have to tho, since ill be in a fema death camp, getting ready to get my head guillotined.

martial law is when civil rule is suspended..i don't know what's going on with those troops tbh

from wikipedia
Quote:
The United States is formally in an ongoing limited state of emergency declared by several Presidents for several reasons. A state of emergency began on January 24, 1995 with the signing of Executive Order 12947 by President Bill Clinton. In accordance with the National Emergencies Act, the executive order's actual effect was not a declaration of a general emergency, but a limited embargo on trade with "Terrorists Who Threaten To Disrupt the Middle East Peace Process".[30] This "national emergency" was expanded in 1998 to include additional targets such as Osama bin Laden,[31] and has been continued to at least 2008 by order of President George W. Bush.[32] There are a number of other ongoing national emergencies of this type,[33][34] regarding for instance diamond trade with Sierra Leone. Especially noteworthy are the ongoing states of emergency declared on November 14, 1979 regarding the Iran Hostage Crisis,[35] that declared on March 15, 1995 with respect to Iran,[36] and that declared on September 14, 2001 through Bush's Proclamation 7463, regarding the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.[37]

President Barack Obama extended George Bush's Declaration of Emergency regarding terrorism on September 10, 2009[38] and again on September 10, 2010.[39]

^ now while i didnt know about that, i also dont see anything in that paragraph pertaining to the states themselves.

and let me also say that i am fully against using any type of military force to subdue americans. that's what police are for. but i dont see martial law being imposed with 20,000 troops.

it would only take a stroke of the pen,now to enforce it is another matter(if there were to be an actuall large scale uprising, which i don't think there would be

John Yoo: My Gift to the Obama Presidency - WSJ.com

http://reason.com/blog/2011/03/28/jo...s-barack-obama

Quote:
John Yoo Endorses Barack Obama’s "Kinetic Military Action"

Damon W. Root | March 28, 2011

In the recent Reason.tv video “What Happened to the Antiwar Movement,” my colleague Brian Doherty noted that you can actually still find bumper stickers in these United States featuring a peace symbol inside the first letter of the word Obama. Assuming the president’s new “kinetic military action” in the Middle East hasn’t prompted those car owners to peel the stickers off, here’s something that might: John Yoo, the controversial former Bush administration lawyer, executive power enthusiast, “torture memo” author, and Andrew Jackson apologist, thinks Obama’s undeclared war on Libya is a perfectly acceptable use of presidential power. As Yoo wrote last week in The Wall Street Journal:

President Barack Obama has again flip-flopped on national security—and we can all be grateful. Having kept Guantanamo Bay open, resumed military commission trials for terrorists, and expanded the use of drones, the president has now ordered the U.S. military into action without Congress's blessing....

Last Monday, Mr. Obama notified Congress that he ordered military action in Libya "pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct U.S. foreign relations and as Commander in Chief and Chief Executive."

For once, Mr. Obama has the Constitution about right.

I wonder how many Obama voters expected John Yoo to endorse their man’s vision of presidential war powers? But regardless, as New York University legal scholar Richard Epstein explains, both Yoo and Obama have it wrong:

The power to declare war lies in the Congress; the power to execute the decision to declare war rests in the President. The power to declare as I understand is the power to change the state of relations between the United States and a foreign nation, so that the laws of war now apply to them. The function of the President is then to lead that military effort as the commander-in-chief, not of the United States writ large, but of the Army and the Navy, and the militia when called into the active service of the United States—which it can be only when done pursuant to some Congressional action. As was made very clear in Federalist Number 69, the President’s power are far more limited than those of a king or even the governor of a state.
