I know a bit about explosives, thermite/thermate I can make from things around the appartment...includi ng a high temp ignighter...

The main chemical reaction in thermate is the same as in thermite: an aluminothermic reaction between powdered aluminium and a metal oxide.(red iron oxide)
In addition to thermite, thermate also contains sulfur (A fuel) and sometimes barium nitrate (an oxidizer), both of which increase its thermal effect, create flame in burning, and significantly reduce the ignition temperature .
Thermate requires an oxidizer,(barium nitrate) and both can burn (once ignited) under water.

thermite was introduced into america by chinese railroad workers, who used the compound to melt rails together.

If it were me...thermite/thermate are too slow.
If you want to cut thru thick girders or steel colums you'd use a shape charge. Much easier to setup. If the colums are small enough simple det chord would work. But that's only for bldg. 7.
I believe the towers came down because of the inferior way they were designed.
