Father Warns Parents, Kids Of Synthetic Marijuana Dangers

Boy, 13, Near Death After Smoking Synthetic Marijuana Known As Spice

A local father is reaching out to other parents and their children about the dangers of a synthetic marijuana that has left his teenage son near death.

"I just want to get it out to these kids. It's dangerous, so dangerous," said Raymond Rice.

Rice described his son, Brandon, as a happy kid who loved baseball and roller coasters.

But Brandon, 13, is currently hooked up to machines that are keeping him alive at Children's Hospital. (Pittsburgh, PA)

Rice said his son smoked a form of synthetic marijuana known as spice that caused a chemical burn on his lung. Until recently, synthetic marijuana, which also goes by the name K2, was legal in Pennsylvania.

"He smoked the spice. (He) thought he was smoking marijuana," said Rice.
He said his son soon developed nausea, a full-body rash, headaches and a high fever.

"We actually put him in cold water. His temperature was 103.7. (We) took him out of the cold water and it was 104.2 and it just started eating his lung away," said Rice.

His son has since been hospitalized for six weeks, with doctors saying there's little they can do to improve his condition.

"There's nothing they can do, nothing they can do at all. They tried everything possible they could do here," said Rice.

Brandon Rice's family will hold a vigil at New Stanton Alliance Church on South Center Avenue in New Stanton at 7 p.m. Monday.

Earlier this year, Gateway Rehab Medical Director Neil Capretto

told Channel 4 Action News anchor Mike Clark

that synthetic marijuana poses serious dangerous. (I think they meant "serious dangers")

"We do not really know the long-term effects of this substance because it hasn't been studied, so really the use of it on an ongoing basis or even a one-time basis is literally Russian roulette with your brain," said Capretto.

I don't like the fact that they keep referring to spice as "synthetic marijuana". It's nothing of the kind. It's an ALTERNATIVE to marijuana because marijuana is illegal. If marijuana were not illegal, spice wouldn't exist, and dumb ass people wouldn't smoke it.

I still can't get my head around why kids wouldn't just get the real stuff, last I heard that K2 shit is super expensive, but I guess so is weed in America. I'll never try it.

My guess it's this kid got some type of fucked up batch, and or took some incredibly huge bong hits like one would do with weed and ended up holding it in for a long time. Pretty sad this had to happen tho
