How can you tell if someone is cool?

I think most ppl like to think of themselves as cool in one way or another but there are so many pitfalls that anyone can fall into that someone might point to and declare "that is not cool". So beyond just being sometimes cool, or generally cool, what does it take to be thoroughly cool?

The biggest advantage is definitely being black. That is like an automatic 100 cool points at birth.

Next I think is smoking. Despite what the TRUTH commercials tell us, smoking is indeed cool in the fact that it symbolizes that carefree, fuck it image. Lots of douches smoke too though, so it takes other qualities to confirm coolness.

The way you talk is definitely the most tricky. You gotta say the right thing 99% of the time or say nothing at all. what is the right thing though? It's what seperates the cool from the non-cool.

Finally is that independent, non-judgemental, laid back character that, like being black, you gotta just be born with it I think. You can't give too much of a fuck what other people say or do but you also gotta set an example, I think.

As an example of absolute coolness, I cite James Dean. I'm not even a fan of him at all, but his coolness is undeniable.

This is very insightful. I hadn't considered modesty to be a factor in coolness, but now that you mention it I do tend to respect modest men (as long as they're not just cheap or pious). Modesty has been a virtue of mine as of late. I used to like to be real showy but I found that it's too much effort and affects too many superficial relationships, and showiness probably breeds contempt too.

'cool' doesn't mean the same thing to everyone.

I piss off some of the people I work with because I call them out on stupid shit that they know they shouldn't be trying to get away with. I don't give a fuck, though. The rest of the people I work with genuinely appreciate that, and have told me I can be really intimidating, but I'm very fair, and 'Cool'.

James Dean-good example. My Mom told me about how his presence affected her generation while he was alive and how his death sent ripples through the country for years. I don't know who I might equate him to today.

She said he was the original rebel for her generation, and maybe the rest, since.

On the smoking-pfft. That's programming through marketing. I bought into it, and thankfully I gave it up.

What could Samuel Jackson do (besides the obvious) that wouldn't be cool? Show me someone else that takes a bite of a cheeseburger with the same authority. That mutha fucka could fart in church, and the pastor would stop his sermon and with a "Hallalujah!" and a fist pump.

If I feel someone is generally funny and a good person I guess you can say I think they are cool. But i'm also a funny good person, and that makes for some hefty alpha-beta fights in class. i gotta keep that shit locked down, but be good guy about it.

yeah i'm cool as hell with mad swagger to boot.

I think it's cool if you can listen more than you talk.
But, I also think it's cool to stalk people.

well bragging is not cool.. but when i think of coolness in terms of modesty, i think of the working man who has his little routines that keep life simple but enjoyable, i.e. sack lunches for work, early to bed, maybe a pay-per-view boxing match on the weekend with a six pack, keeps his personal property on the up and up...

if i knew that guy I would definitely say he's cool just by virtue of him being modest and routine. i could point to him and say I have absolutely no problem; nothing against him.
