Is cable TV worth it right now?

I've been without cable TV for about 8 months now. It's not like I'm not alive and doing fine, and I find other ways of entertainment, mainly the internet and music and sometimes I rent DVD's.

But I think back to last year when I did have cable TV, I felt like I was more intellectually satisifed, believe it or not! I miss all of the On-Demand movies and TV and music vid's, sports, etc.

I think it's $29.99/mo with a six month contract right now for basic cable + on-demand or I could step up and get some premium channels and movie channels. And fuck, if I really felt like it I could throw in the playboy channel and one of those every-game sports packages.

Should I? Do you?

BTW I do have rabbit ears right now so I can watch the big ones for free, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS and a few other highly obscure channels.

i went without for years until i got a call from my local tv guys giving me a promotional $10/month for 6 months deal. i took it. fast forward 6 months, i cancel it. 2 weeks ago, they called again offering the same promotion with higher speed internet connection. deal.

is it worth it? no. not if you are paying full price. more often than not there is nothing on tv you really want to watch, rather, you watch it because you are bored and don't know what else to do with yourself. you find yourself angry at the commercials that are force fed into your brain every 5 minutes, and wonder why you are paying a monthly fee when you have to subject yourself to these fucking advertisements. isn't that payment enough?

anyways, cable is good if you are a sports guy, and like to watch that shit live. everything else you can literally get on the internet. fuck cable. i only got it cuz the girlfriend needs something to do when i want to play games.

yeah it is. but that is just for basic. they charge extra for other shit so it works out to like $25/month for what we wanted for channels. that's how they get you. who the fuck wants just regular cable? it's a clever scheme, you are shown every single channel available to you in the menu, but do not know which one's you have or don't have, so you find yourself surfing and clicking, only to find out you don't have this channel or that, and you get this thing in your brain that compels you to buy more channels. fuck cable tv and their goddamn clever marketing tactics.

As long as I get steelers thru digital uhf that's enough tv for me. That and local/national news.

I get 22 channels with a home made antenna, 4 are christian programming (blocked) ,
2 are music (blocked)
2 are shopping (blocked)

abc
cbs
nbc
fox
and variations of them, make up the rest, and I get something called ion...and ion life, that show mostly old and weird movies.

I used to buy alot of movies, but now I only download them. (btjunkie)

oh and I just bought basic phone (landline) and internet (dsl) from verizon @ $32.44 a month.

Its worth it but only because of the sport. Otherwise I wouldnt bother, everything else can be downloaded months before they decide to air it in the UK.

I have a pirate satellite

I just have to download the code to make a new access card from time to time when it gets blocked.

All I pay is like $16 and change for the basic package (to get the signal) and everything else is unlocked (even PPV, but I need a separate code for shit like ufc, boxing and wrestling).

So do they still show anything on pay-per-view besides fights? I remember they used to show live concerts on PPV too. But wtf else could they have that you would want to watch that's PPV?

we just chucked the cable out of our bill yesterday. there's really nothing you can't find with varying levels of legality-nearly every NFL game is available streaming someplace.

OK but this brings up a point I forgot to make.

TV is so much easier. You just click the remote and it's instantly on the big screen right in front of you; great picture and great sound. On the net you have to do all the work yourself with the searching and the downloading, plus you have to think of all the ideas of what to watch YOURSELF. TV has a TV guide so you can say "oh that looks good". again, you have to do all the work yourself on the internet.

connan o'brien said it best: "TV: it's kind of like the internet, but in a more comfortable chair".

new movies mostly. but some pro sports teams sell games out of their market on PPV. and porn.

I don't really use PPV, it was just worth noting that they get unlocked as well.

So you have to pay for a regular cable subscription to get a sports package, right? You can't JUST have a sports package and no cable TV channels, correct?

no it is direct tv, so the company has contractual obligations to give shit along with the stuff i need...They know the only way they will get new subscribers is offer something the competition doesn't have, in this case NFL Sunday Ticket™...

Luckily for my circumstances the deal worked in both parties favors...

In Feb of next year after the Superbowl I will call the company, bitch about it not having what i need, opt out of my contract or get a bunch of free movie channels until next season when I find out what offer they are giving out then...
