There is always a ton of empty rhetoric swirling around events like this. Brian Williams showed Obama the latest New York Post, featuring a picture of the WTC memorial with a swat officer holding a machine gun standing in front of it. He asked him, "Is this representative of where the country has come to over the last 10 years" and Obama, without missing a beat, immediately went into how "we are definitely safer than we were 10 years ago." There's no way to play this hand without BS. Whether people are safer is debatable; whether we are experiencing more of the ideals of what it's supposed to mean to be an American: more freedom, more liberty, etc. really isn't. For Obama, going into an election next year, to acknowledge this is really more than anyone can reasonably expect.
