5 to 9

Is it the new 9 to 5?

I work basically those hours, my job requires me to be on call in case something goes wrong.

Do you believe this is the new american landscape?

I think slavery is the real new American landscape. I mean not yet, give it a few decades though.

I dunno, I still am compensated well and I love what i do.

If that's slavery, i'll take it.

Plus there's ample room for promotion as the baby boomers fade out of the workforce.

depends on the job, hombre.

as it stands for myself whilst on call; i am supposed to be available all hours, however, that only happens one week of every 6 weeks... which isn't bad.

Maybe overworking people is just getting to a point where people are complaining about it. If this is so, then perhaps it is the beginning of a turning point. I'm reminded of the late 70's, when the Sexual Revolution was in full swing, and in their reflections on it, people wondered if in another decade or two, everyone would be fucking in public. In fact, people were only just starting to question it, and that marked the beginning of a new direction.

Everyone was fucking in public until HIV and STD's took hold.

Consequences of actions, in the modern day sense.

There was once a time where being a C student in America was better than an A student in India.

Now, not so much.

I'm thinking of looking for a night shift job to help keep me going because it would still have me free during the business day to try and get my own stuff going.

If that feels less stressful to you, please feel free to take the reigns of my job.

Day/night has no meaning to me.

I work 40-60 a week

the service techs might work 20-80+ a week. Especially in the summer and if they're on call.

i usually put in 38-40 hours a week, being salaried i don't have to clock in and out, so I have a little bit of flexibility in coming/going. If I need to leave for an hour to run an errand, I don't even need to tell my boss. But if I'm trying to meet deadline or going out in the field, its expected you'll take the time you need to get the job done, thats the bottom line.

My last job I worked in the newspaper industry. They start their production runs around 9-10pm, so the only times I ever got calls were like 9-3am, shit sucked getting randomly called at 2am saturday while your piss drunk at the bar and theyre freaking about out their sunday run getting delayed. Happened to me more than once.
